S&P

I was just as shocked as you guys when I tasted a dish that was that bland. I'm not someone that adds salt and pepper to my dishes at restaurants unless it really needs it. These dishes needed it. Something so simple, just not executed.

I often get frustrated with guests that add salt before they even taste the dish. To me it shows how much you don't know how to eat out. At least try it first!

I think the last time I added salt to a dish in a restaurant was when I added salt to french fries at Fat Harry's about 20 years ago.

And? Many fine dishes at fine dining establishments need a little salt to suit some tastes. It is not a sign of a barbaric palate.

no, the girlfriend goes to Tulane so I haven't dined east of Stennis in months.

eta: just googled it and noticed it was in Lacombe.. may need to check it out without the gf (there's nothing vegetarian on the menu)

This sounds like an episode of Top Chef.

Next was a wild mushroom and truffle rissoto. The rissoto was well seasoned and good. But the dish was missing a main component. The rissoto should have been served as a bed for something... Anything. It did not stand alone very well... But was good.

I'm a little surprised to see this. To me, their risotto is up there with any appetizer in the city.

Guarantee they'd make up something insanely good for her. It's a very romantic place, so if you don't take her she's gonna be pissed. She's going to wish she ate animal parts after watching you eat there. It's the most romantic restaurant I've ever been to. Full on fire place raging and real candelabras.

At a place like Stella! the dish is created by the chef to allow certain flavors and spices to stand out. If I go to a high end restaurant that has me feeling the need to put s & p on my food constantly, I'm probably not going back.

Why, I've never equated bad taste with barbaric.

That's fair enough. But it doesn't mean that there aren't any dishes that come out of Stella's kitchen that couldn't stand a little salt for some people.

This is pretty much how I think. In the case of the dish in question, lobster and winter truffles are expensive ingredients with fairly delicate flavors. If the kitchen is going to err with seasoning, most likely it will be on the side of under seasoning so that the ingredients aren't overwhelmed.

Apparently this cannot happen...ever.

Nah, I agree with you that sometimes stuff is just under/over seasoned, regardless of the quality or price point of the restaurant. But given some of the other comments by the OP in the thread, I'm inclined to side with the kitchen on this one.

FWIW the executive chef and the sous chef, 2 of the 5 diners, that were eating with us were the ones that initially commented at the table.

true story especially when you end up comparing it to your own product.

I feel like the tone of this review turned negative throughout the thread, and if it did, I apologize. Stella! Is a fantastic restaurant. I would give it 3.75 out of 5. Not my favorite, but certainly a good experience that I would recommend to some for certain occasions.

I didn't perceive it as negative, merely you stating your views on the food/service you received. I thought it was a fair review.
You post it on the Dining Guide?

I haven't decided if I'm going to Stella! next month for the ole bday on the GF's dime or August. I know she would probably prefer August and I've only been to August at lunch. Tough life decisions I know, but I'd like to give the place a shot.

Well, especially since it's your GF's treat, go ahead and give Stella! a shot, dude.

I think the main thing is to try to get something you don't normally find around here - venison, squab, the chili prawns, etc.

Generally, they'll also have an unusual ice cream - chocolate banana is the one I remember the most.
