The House Natural Resources Committee approved Rep. George Miller's (D-Calif) amendment to bar new offshore oil and gas drilling permits to BP "
The Miller amendment would bar a company from drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS)if more than 10 fatalities occurred at any of its facilities, or if it incurred fines of $10 million or more under Clean Air or Water Act within the preceding 7 years.
10 Million in fines is not hard to rack up.

Normally I would agree. But at some point BP must be considered a hazard to the public welfare. The incident in the GOM isn't the only major BP incident in the last 5 years.

it's the responsibility of the drilling contractor to ensure safety to it's employees.
not just bp.

If the contractor is calling all of the operational shots I agree, but that wasn't the case.

if the contractor monitors the well properly, then no matter what the operations state, it doesn't matter.

I firmly believe that this administration is really actively trying to end the oil industry, at least domestically. With this and the forced signing of the contracts, see " Not encouraging news" thread, it is clear that they are out not only for BP but for the industry as a whole.

One of the many factors that never gets talked about, even though it is one of the most important.

I believe the contractor did monitor it properly. But BP decided to proceed even after the failed pressure test.

That has nothing to do with them recognizing the kick and taking action.

I want to scream.
I mean NO DISRESPECT to anyone BUT wasn't there in large part HUMAN ERROR or BAD DECISION MAKING involved here???
IF SO, you don't shut down the industry for that.
I'm getting REALLY PISSED OFF AND FEEL THE NEED TO SCREAM SO I'M TYPING IN ALL CAPS ... it's NOT making me feel a damn bit better.
Screw em all.
eta: I'm so pissed that I replied without reading any of the above posts ... sorry. I'm still not any happier.

Keep saying that if it makes you feel better. BP has 3 major incidents in the last 5 years that are a result of negligence/stupidity. I'm beginning to see a pattern.
The problem is if you keep letting rogue/irresponsible operators have major f-ups, then the whole industry (even very responsible operators) gets buried under a mountain of regulations and moratoriums.
How do you suggest preventing a single company from having major incident after major incident?

I'm sorry but why is the oil industry special in the deaths? Why aren't airlines, coal companies, quickie mart deaths viewed the same way?
Posted on 7/14/10 at 5:07 pm to LSU0358
Im not saying that BP is not at fault, they diffidently share some of the blame. This situation was cause by numerous things, the two main being. That one Transocean and BP did not follow industry guidelines and safe practice and and but peoples live at risk and cost lives. Second that the crew on the floor obviously were not doing there job/ paying attention. This situation is a two way street, each are equally accountable. However you only hear about one of these major frick ups.

Also, how would CoVentures work? Are the deaths spread around based on % of ownership?

Greenhead, you sir are 100% correct and I am sorry those guys were killed, but SOMEONE on that crew SHOULD have seen the kick and shut it in WAY before they did (or tried). Being in deep shite for doing your job is not as bad as being dead!! They had to have a clue what was happening and were just asleep at the switch. I guess this is why they call them accidents...
