Chicago 2016: Cry the Beloved Country

Bring home the Gold Obamas!
Voting begins at 10 AM central time. The final cities are Madrid, Tokyo, Chicago, and Rio.
I say it'll come down to Chicago and Rio. Madrid won't be picked because the 2012 games are right next door in London. The same goes with Tokyo and the 2008 games being in Beijing. Hopefully Rio's relatively poor infrastructure will be frowned upon. But the fact that the Summer Olympics have never been in South America may be what brings it there. We'll need Lord Obama to work his magic.

It looks like we'll learn the outcome of the votes in about 12 hours. It would be great to have the Olympics in the US again. I would definitely be interested in checking out some of the events.

Chicago just doesnt strike me as a city that is setup well to do the olympics...i think Rio would be a pretty cool place to have them

These will be America's games, based in Chicago.
Besides the fact that Chicago's spending all the money.

the same Chicago that can't keep their government buildings open 5 days a week because they don't have enough money? You really think they are going to pay for it?

Private sector funding.
And don't forget they have Oprah who's a huge supporter of this.

I'll believe it when I see it. I have very little doubt that public money will be going to this if Chicago gets it.

So all the athletes are going to get Toyota Tercels and a copy of "A Million Little Pieces"?

Hey St. Louis boy. Get that negativity out of here.
Those dirty archers already stole the 1904 games away from us after we already won them. Never again. Never forget.

They plan to move it to Chicago because of global warming.

About 4 hours away from the announcement. I hope Rio gets it. I'd much rather see images of Sugarloaf, Ipanema and the Christ the Redeemer statue than the South side of Chicago. Rio actually wants the Olympics. Half of Chicago doesn't give a shite.

I agree. Plus, I thought it was amazing that the Olympics have never been to South America.

That's more propaganda stirred up by the anti-US Americans. Sure there's some opposition to the games from people in Chicago and some don't care, but a large majority want the games there and are interested.

This is my 1k post so I will make it good. Being from Chicago I have mixed emotions.
Why I want the olympics: Great press for the city, not to mention a great overhaul of our transit system. I work for the railroad so this would be great for my pocket book. Also this would create jobs for the time being for many people who are out of work. It would also get the bums out of downtown. (shoe them off like they did in Atlanta).
Why I don't want the Olympics: This would make my job hell for two weeks. Also, Chicago is going through a very violent stage right now with murders and gang violence. Apart from a few nice areas of the city, I would say that Chicago is dirty and gang infested. Also, I see the city losing alot of money on this deal. Who is going to pick up the tab? The city and state. That is who. Also, this olympic push is nothing more than our President trying to pay back his Chicago machine cronies. (Axlerod, Emannuel, Bobby Rush etc...)

the olympics are almost completely irrelevant from a sports and cultural standpoint in the US. Our nations best athletes are playing football, baseball, and basketball. Only one of those is still in the Olympics, and it's like pulling teeth to get the best basketball players to show up for it. Most of the US doesn't give a shite about the games, so give them to someone who cares about them.

The ratings would like to disagree with you.
And, yes, most of the country does care. Michael Phelps was the biggest sports story of 2008.
