Should have sent in bigger guns than Oprah. What the hell did Obama think? That the IOC was made up of a bunch of house wifes that want to be told which books to read and what products to buy? Give me a break, the IOC isn't a bunch of sheep.

The thread on the Poli Board is a disgrace so I will just post my thoughts here. The romanticized version of Rio in most Westerners' minds is BS. Basically every businessman that goes on a trip to Rio has to be provided with private security to prevent kidnapping and in many parts of the country, red lights are only used as stop signs in the evenings to prevent roadside ambushes.
It will be interesting to see how the level of violence will be minimized by Brazilian authorities. There is also a great deal of poverty in Rio, something that cannot be understand by anyone who's only lived in the US. Will death squads be brought in to cleanse the city of homeless people? That's what happened in Sao Paulo as recently has 5 years ago.

I have a few brazilian friends who all have private security when they're back in Brazil. People are concerned about South Africa for the World Cup, but they have nothing on the violence and poverty in Rio. Also, one of the big issues is that there are flavellas right next to very nice areas.
I could easily see a pretty brutal crackdown right before the games

Obama never should have gotten involved. It was political enough. The world voted against us just for that reason. Said Peeps in Chicago were worried about the actual expense of the games. I think it went to the right place. Rio is beautiful.

They'll put the favella residents on busses, give them a sack lunch, and drop them off in the interior....never to be heard from again. It was a "success" in the '80's.

If they were going to have the games in South America it should be in Santiago, where you know the economy is stable and crime rate is fairly low

Some people even hate the Olympics when Obama's face is attached to it. Rediculous. Very small minded indeed.

^It's no secret that Oprah kisses the Obama family's asses, as well as 99% of celebrities.

BUT it completely blows when they're on the other side of the globe and everything is tape delayed.
Actually, this worked out OK for Beijing, for events like swimming and gymnastics, they put them at 10am, so we got it live at 10pm. But it still affected other premium events like basketball and track, which sucks. The worst are the European places (like Athens and London). I think Rio is only an hour ahead, so that should be perfect.

Yeah, from a time zone perspective, this will be fine. I just checked and Rio is one hour ahead of NYC.
