ain't arguing with the wife, but yes I agree, $1200.00 for photo's over shite he won't remember.
I've been holding that on the inside for a while so I'll vent here
YES! shite drove me...son was having trouble processing dairy at the time so I shelled out for TWO professionally made dairy free cakes...that he barley touched...plus buying session, then photos, not to mention the spectacle that took 2 days to set up in the actual party....
Only thing that kept me from really losing my shite was reminding myself that it was for her...not him

Yes, I do think this is something that is forgotten sometimes. Yes, the child may not remember but that parent will. These are memories they are making raising their child.

Do me it was still dumb as shite... honestly we spent more time setting up a balloon arch than with our son that day...and he spent more time having pictures taken than playing....but he won't remember it, but my wife will... he is our first and I saw how much the whole thing...ridiculous as it was to me meant to her. Also made it easier for me bc her and our sons bdays are 2 days apart...so I guess I justified it by saying she asked for the world's most ridiculous party lol

That's funny. Because we blame the boomers FOR SHIPPING ALL OF THE JOBS OVER SEAS! Glad you could get a decent paying job with no college diploma and support a family on one salary. Maybe if you hippies didn't kick the can down the road. Your grandchildren could actually live a nice life.

Women are always trying to out compete each other is the answer.

As to why people spend, well, materialism is basically the alter we worship at. It’s very hard for me to find people to hang out with who just want to enjoy the simple free things. Everyone wants stuff. It’s validation, it’s climbing up the social hierarchy- all the things people do these days to find their meaning in the material.

"Back in my day I bought a brand new car, in cash, after working my part time job one summer. Come on. Just pull yourself up by your boot straps and get a job.... maybe don't go to Starbucks so often."
Every boomer in this thread is COMPLETELY out of touch with reality: wages, inflation, cost of living, job market, etc.
People are SPENDING still because they aren't SAVING. Every generation before was comfortable enough to tithe away savings to retire at say 60-65.
Millenials these days can barely save enough to repair their car if it breaks down. They don't have enough to stuff away for "retirement".
Therefore all the money that YOU BOOMERS saved for retirement, millenials are spending. Because they will work until the day they die.

I think you have my point backwards bro, because you are completely speaking my language. I have three kids and I know just how screwed they are. And it’s FAR more than even what you mention. As for “ boomers” if you mean Xers, I think you are wrong. I think a higher and higher percentage of that ( my ) generation understand how the shell game works and realize who benefits and who doesn’t and knows what that means for the future of the country. The Biden economy, the ersatz quality of globalization, open borders, too big to fail, endless Gubment Gravy for the Ruling Class , the phoniness of EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE has almost every engaged person, regardless of generational differences, seeing the grift clearly.

Every generation?
Social security was started in 1935. Less than 100 years ago.
Pensions started in the late 1800s to about 1920.
Retirement as a concept has not been around that long.
Of course, people had much shorter lives back then as well.

Yeah, these guys do what they say “ Boomers” do. They minimize the other guy’s pain and maximize their own.
Also the perception that great employment was everywhere for college graduates in 1982 or 1973 is pretty funny. College graduates from State college USA ( I’m not talking about the credentialed class or professionals) have always struggled in poverty after graduation. Like me from 1989- 1999. It’s just that we believed in the system, in the concept of upward mobility, and we were proven right. This generation believes they will not have upward mobility and that it’s rigged against them. I personally think they may be right. They ARE inheriting an inherently phony and rotten financial culture that feels more like a grift above them than a path to success that is being passed down to them.

Social media companies have been extremely effective at (1) giving people a window into the carefully curated versions of their acquaintances lives, especially richer acquaintances, and (2) sold companies and marketing teams a treasure trove of consumer-specific preference data with which they can easily and efficiently target almost anyone with advertising suited to their consumption tendencies.
Most people do not have the financial understanding or personal discipline to deal with that.
