this is my favorite. You legit have to try to spend $5 at Starbucks just on coffee even in 2024, if are spending that much then you are fat

thankfully gas station coffee has greatly improved in the rare times i buy coffee

The 20 dollar a month interest free cell phone payment is the real back breaker though. Get out from under that and you can be the next Elon Musk. But that’s too hard to do so people just stay poor.

Ugh, when I was 26 back in 1979, I didn't need a cell phone! Why should you need a cell phone in 2024?!? It's a unnecessary expense! You kids and your cellular telephones!

They usually say $8 or $10 for coffee when they talk about Starbucks on here.

Life has never been better, more prosperous, and more vibrant. Some of you need to work harder and change your attitudes.

Well I know that many National Parks are now using a registration system for people because of overcrowding and I see tons of new vehicles on the roads, so many people are still spending.
I think bringing national parks into the discussion counters the original point you were trying to make. National park can be a pretty budget friendly vacation. Cost of transportation to/from the park is likely the biggest expense, depending on where you're traveling to/from. A lot cheaper to spend 4-5 days camping and hiking a national park than to spend that time in Disneyworld.

Social media is exposing people to places they'd never have thought to visit. They see someone else's photos from a trip and decide they want to go there too. Hence the need for reservations to avoid overcrowding at some parks now. I'll admit that there's a handful of places I'd like to go visit that I hadn't known about until seeing FB posts from old acquaintances I probably haven't actually seen or spoken to in years.

The OT used to brag about their badass cars and expensive toys. Now it brags about how old and cheap their cars are. And talks shite about other dudes with expensive trucks.

It may be a lot of the same people that because of the toys of the past are limited to old/cheap cars or they learned they didn't like the weight of debt.

In the end, someone has to drive the economy and if everyone quits spending OP will have a lot more to complain about.

Are you suggesting there aren't plenty people today who do so as well?

I’m saying people simultaneously complain about high prices and inflation while refusing to give up frivolous spending

Sure. I can't imagine that's any more prevalent now than during any other inflationary period of our existence.

The causes to spend more are way more frivolous than in the past. Even if you had money in the past, there were only limited things to spend it on.

This just isn't true. It's also telling that you keep mentioning "frivolous" spending, but then give examples of family celebrations. That's really frivolous to you?

Are you talking about like in your own lifetime?

There really aren't, if so. I'd say you are just more overly perceiving such.

I ain't arguing with the wife, but yes I agree, $1200.00 for photo's over shite he won't remember.

My wife seems to like to take pictures of the kids every year. Mini sessions for Easter, Christmas, Birthdays and whatever session her photographer is having. We probably spend about $1,500 per year just on professional pictures, but then the wife and my two daughters need their hair and makeup done each time, plus ordering dresses/outfits on Amazon with the promise that she will return them(and never does).

None of these pictures have never seen a frame. They're still in the packages she received them in. Stacks and stacks of pictures that will never show their faces. It's a touchy subject in our household.

Yeah, because in the past you could've bought frivolous things like a TV for your bedroom. It would've only cost you about 2 weeks salary 40-50 years ago compared to less than a day's worth of pay today.

being a family celebration exempts it from charges of frivolousness?

while I will not argue this point, i can tell you that not everyone is doing worse today than they were a few years ago. I have made more money in the last three years than I have ever in my life.
