There's a reason I'm referencing my twenties/formative years. I currently have zero debt, make more money than probably 98% of the posters on this board, will be putting a $500k down payment on a place within the next 1-2 years, and am on track to retire comfortably in my early 60s. That's why I mentioned starting saving whatever you can as early in your career as you can.

Regardless, I'm doing fine, baw

Same here. I’d love to go on a vacation this year but I just can’t afford it. I also set a very practical budget when purchasing a car last year.

I’m cutting back everywhere possible while not completely restricting enjoying life. I haven’t taken the GF out to a nice restaurant since February.

Why do people keep complaining about the costs of things and inflation, but they still feel the need to keep up with the Jones’?

I don't have to keep up with Jones', but I do those things because I like those things.

I also don't go into debt to do or have those things, I choose to spend my discretionary income on them.

But I can still bitch about how expensive groceries are right now.

Seems a larger portion of some of you young n generations need to learn how to save. When I was a muskrat I had no ac in a hoopty in southern Louisiana. Now look at me I am working my way up the Primerica pyramid and own a Miata.

No, but in my opinion, the bar generally will be higher. The OP mentions having a photographer, but that in and of itself isn't necessarily frivolous.

Again, Revelator just seems like a miserable person (an assessment that isn't based solely on this thread).

My 1996 Dodge intrepid didn't have AC, and holy hell was that fun sitting in standstill traffic on the Kennedy expressway in Chicago in the middle of summer

Nice to see this. Living small for a while makes the reward later on when thigs get better much more worth it. The sacrifice builds up the reward.

None of these pictures have never seen a frame. They're still in the packages she received them in. Stacks and stacks of pictures that will never show their faces. It's a touchy subject in our household.

Does she post them on social media?

i gotcha. his original post seems to be conflating two things though - people with money spending it on things he disagrees with, and people without much money spending it on dumb shti when they should be saving.

i think for the most part the people that are spending tons of money on photo shoots, smash cake parties, fancy family vacations, etc are also the ones that can afford it. so, while i PERSONALLY tend to agree that a lot of that stuff is frivolous spending, i could give a shite about how some other family spends their discretionary income.

however, i do think there is a large percentage of the population, lots of the 20-somethings, who spend a ton of money on lifestyle stuff (some of the stuff discussed in this thread) who then turn around and complain that they are missing out on the American dream because the boomers stole it from them for some nebulously defined, vague reason. they'll say they cant afford a house because of some faceless group of senior citizens off in Florida or wherever, but they'll spend $3k a month on consumer bullshite. and then they'll act like capitalism has failed them and start demanding help from teh government and advocating overthrow of the entire system. that's a problem.

Not everyone is doing that shite. Just the ones who don't know how to manage their money.

The ones that get me are the ones that complain about money being tight and then go on two family cruises per year. (Carnival of course.)

I bet most of these guys drive nice trucks, have a decent to nice house, maybe a boat, hunting camp etc.

No way other people can afford a $250 bounce house for a toddler's birthday party though

You'd be shocked who I was competing with at the 450k house level. I wasn't fighting with other accountants, finance bros, and bankers that's for sure. It doesn't take a genius to see people are leveraged out of their eyeballs. I'm not so ate up with it that I care about 250 dollar bounce houses twice a year. I'm irritated that people with less than 20k savings in their late 30s with kids are going to Disney world on credit cards.

Gotta admit I wasn’t expecting a rant about photographers. But I’ll match that energy. $80 for 2 digital prints at the daycare. No thanks I’ll just use my iPhone at the park and then Walgreens for 50 cents a print.

Irritated by exactly the same.

Its hard to tell your kids how stupid other people are.
