Some are built on a truck frame. Some are Monocoque supported.
Monocoque
Monocoque also called structural skin, is a structural system in which loads are supported by an object's external skin, in a manner similar to an egg shell.

I refer to my SUV as a truck in most cases because it has 445 HP V8.
Definitely more of a truck than car.

Like me, I suppose. The first SUV I bought a couple of decades ago was classed by the manufacture as a "light truck." I understand that this was to take advantage of the less stringent milage standards for trucks rather than autos.

Less syllables is the real answer here. Truck is simply easier to say.

The fit the definition of truck in the dictionary.

quote:same. A 4 wheel drive v8 on a truck frame is a truck. We no longer had much use for a bed but needed to pull a boat and drive the rutted road to the duck camp. The first thing my husband did when we got it was stuck his leather work gloves in the door. It is a truck.

The original SUV's were closer to a truck than a car. I remember the first Jeep Cherokee I got into in 1990. Had to climb up. By the 2000's they were stationwagons.

Some time back, cars went to the unibody design, and trucks still had/have body on frame construction. early SUVs were adaptation of trucks, using the truck frame and adding a rear cabin instead of a truck bed, so we called them trucks too. or, when the first SUVs (vans) became popular for the hippies, we called them trucks, and the grateful dead sang "truckin." and sweet jane was living on reds and vitamin C and cocaine.

Better than people calling their side by sides ‘bikes’

One hauls friends. The other hauls stuff.
Why not have one of each?
FWIW, I’ve only heard one person call an SUV a truck. She was a gorgeous, hot chick. THAT is how smart she was.

They took "truck" off the emblem in '98 or '99.
Saying that, the vehicle pictured is a truck.

I have a couple of SUV's (Saab 9-7x & an Expedition) but I never refer to them as one of my 'trucks', that is reserved for my old '94 F-150. When my wife says we are going to need the truck, she means the truck (F-150) only. Otherwise, if we need something to pick up bigger than our cars, she will refer to the Saab or Expedition specifically.
