I don't know how you guys argue either side passionately when we have a socialized education system on one hand and an entitlement program on the other. It's government creating a problem and then creating another layer as a solution.
The answer is to undo, not do more.

I don’t care since I’m going to benefit. I hear you. But stop calling yourself a conservative. You are a big government liberal. Own it, brother.

This is how the whores act when you try to get a better deal.
They frame it as an expense instead of a deduction.
This is what they want it to look like.
And why the hell will it take 3 years to implement?
Because people will never see the money.
Remember Citizens FAIR?

You'd think a lawyer would have better things to do than trolling a message board. Actually, it is a certainty that a lawyer would have better things to do. Money stolen by the government from your paycheck, and from your employers account, when it is worth whatever the current rate of inflation says it is worth, and then given back to you 40 years later when those same dollars can only be worth much less than when they were stolen from you, is not an entitlement. It is a form of slavery, forcing you to loan the government money with which to operate.

You pay $5,190 per child in property taxes?
The median annual property tax payment in Louisiana is $1,065.

It needs competition.
Its fricked because there is no mechanism to stop the spending and no incentive to educate the children.

I anticipate the cost of private schools will increase by the average “scholarship” amount by the second year.
Privatizing public services has never ever saved money. It always ends up costing taxpayers much more than predicted.

It’s not an entitlement program to the beneficiaries.. it’s a a forced retirement system that seeks to balance both ends of the income spectrum by flattening the distributions based on amounts paid into the spectrum
It’s an entitlement program for the government due to their accounting method

So the grants are available to everyone, and both of my children attend private school. I'm not so sure I'm even going to apply for this grant. I would much rather it go to someone that really needs it. I honestly would rather it be merit based and based on need. I.E. lil' Demarcus holding down a 4.0 at craptown middle school, and looks to have a bright future, but his mom can't afford to send him to a better school.

Why does that matter? Do you understand where tax revenue comes from?

Public schools better start competing.

What money to do you pay to the state specifically for public schools?
Property taxes.

If you are one of these people that left the state a long time ago, you people need to just shut the frick up and worry about Houston.

I think this is a great idea.
If I don’t like the public school option, I can opt out and send my kids to private school.
But I believe they aren’t going far enough. What if I don’t like the neighborhood BREC tennis courts open to me and my family? Couldn’t the state throw in a couple of grand a year so I could join the raquet club?
And Webb and City Park are too crowded. My time is valuable. How about the state giving me about 5K a year to join CCL?

I can name one right within this category that’s cheaper when pulled out from the public sphere… charter schools are cheaper and the data coming in continues to suggest better on all fronts

Breaking the government indoctrination camps we call schools seems worthwhile. How to pay for it is trickier.

Should public schools deny attendance to students?
I'm sure that would help average test scores.
Public schools could also deny handicap people. A blind student can run about $100k per year to instruct. That's money that can provide better resources to the student body as a whole.
Let's make public schools competitive again.
Or we could go the other way. Force private schools to accept everyone. Including students with severe mobility and mental handicaps.
Make private schools look more like public schools.

quote:because you explicitly said you were getting “my money back.” Your stated you paid this much in taxes for schools and therefore entitled to a refund.
Why does that matter?
I’m questioning whether you actually currently pay enough in taxes to cover the cost of your kids’ educations in the first place.

I have researched this extensively and know this to be false. Please post the data that informs your position.

Some, yes. Like they once did. Suspend/expel unruly kids, and by 10th grade put many in vocational training instead of high school.
Public schools are little more than job creators in many places, with "butts in seat" far more important than a competent classroom.
Public schools are all about funding.
