Duh, because the state wasn’t funding this before. It is an entirely new program; thus entirely new spending.

Arguing whether or not it's a good or fair policy has nothing to do with if it's creating new spending.
Liberals argue fairness and how good a policy is when they want to spend more, too. It's no even a partisan scenario.

I think this is a great idea.
If I don’t like the public school option, I can opt out and send my kids to private school.
But I believe they aren’t going far enough. What if I don’t like the neighborhood BREC tennis courts open to me and my family? Couldn’t the state throw in a couple of grand a year so I could join the raquet club?
And Webb and City Park are too crowded. My time is valuable. How about the state giving me about 5K a year to join CCL?
If you aren’t happy with the services that are open to the public shouldn’t we all get better access to private facilities?

While I like the concept of school choice, I don’t think the charter school program has been successful thus far. I fear this will be an even bigger boondoggle, but I will need to see more about this plan.

This a disingenuous and intellectually dishonest slant on what the bill does.
What the bill actually does is ties a portion of education dollars to children and not to school systems.

Get ready for a repeal of the homestead exemption and major hikes on property taxes, just like every other state that doesn't have an income tax and/or sales tax.

ALL money spent by the government is generated by the citizens. Income taxes, sales taxes, corporate taxes, fees, etc. all come out of the citizens pocket at some point.

Bring it on.
At least property taxes are charged on a local level, and I can get my school board member or my parish council member to answer the phone and talk to me.
If my net tax bill doesn't go down one penny, yet more power and decisions are made at the local level, this is a huge win.

Charter programs in Orleans Parish have brought the condition of public schools in that parish from completely horrific, to on average, simply bad. There are a few charter schools doing very well by any standard, but they are all magnet "test to get in" type schools.
One thing I do like about charters is that if they suck, they get closed. Even if voucher schools suck, they keep getting voucher money, I beleive.
