The dream of converting Metairie's Shrine on Airline from a baseball stadium to a state-of-the-art venue for high school football, soccer, rugby and concerts took its first step toward reality Wednesday thanks to a multi-million dollar taxpayer-funded investment.
Following months of negotiations with the state agency that owns the Shrine, the Jefferson Parish Council signed off on an agreement that sets aside $3.5 million in "seed funding" to begin design work on the overhaul.
In total, the Parish Council has committed $15 million to the renovation, which aims to re-orient the baseball stadium to a rectangular field with a new set of stands for spectators, along what is currently right and center fields.

Kyle France, board chair of the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District, which owns the Shrine, said they've been in talks with United States Football League about locating a minor league team at the Shrine. The league's New Orleans Breakers currently play their home games in Birmingham, Alabama.
France said they've also had conversations with United Soccer League about anchoring a team at the Shrine.

I Miss having a legit minor league baseball team. The few years when we were the Astros affiliate, the stadium was legit
Also I hate that stupid name of the stadium.

It's hard to get people to go sit at a minor league baseball game in the heat of summer
I actually think a soccer team would work and draw more than any minor league baseball team ever did

This might work if they can consistently make it a multiplex like they have over the last few years. Georgia State did the same thing with the old Turner Field in Atlanta, and now it's home to their football team.

The Shrines current configuration is the absolute worst for football/soccer games.
Glad they are giving it a facelift.

Then why does every attempt at soccer fail here?
Soccer will never succeed here ever.

They were regularly putting 8k plus in the stands on weekends when it was a fun environment to watch a game.
Even in the dead of summer.
When the stadium experience went to crap and the team sucked, was when the “it’s too hot” excuses started.
Heck the heat helped with the thirsty Thursday games

The first few years has success especially when the Zephyr's won the Triple A World Series in 1998. I used to have a blast as a kid going to the Friday Night games and sitting on the levee to watch the postgame fireworks display.

I think it could be okay but putting the team in Metarie is not going to help

Boy, I hope they're not pinning their hopes on a USFL team.

The Mississippi Braves draw decent crowds in the summer and the heat in New Orleans and Jackson Ms are about the same. The difference is probably that the M-Braves are a Braves affiliate and Ms is full of Braves fans. Having no affiliation to a popular MLB team hurt the Zephyrs.

M-Braves also have a much smaller stadium, which helps.
Shrine's just too darn big for a minor-league baseball stadium these days.

The stadium has very little to with fans showing up when it’s hot and humid.

While I enjoy minor league baseball, and went to many a Zephyrs game (never went once they changed their name) it wound up that we actually got out at about the right time.
--The team left after the 2019 season and was supposed to begin play in 2020 in Wichita as the Wichita Wind Surge (another stupid name). That whole 2020 minor league season did not occur due to COVID.
-- The a-hole owner responsible for the Baby Cakes name and moving the team, Lou Schwechheimer, died of COVID. Karma's a bitch.
-- During the COVID hiatus, Major League Baseball used its option and completely took over Minor League Baseball. The result was that fourteen leagues spread out over five levels was reduced to eleven leagues over four levels, massive re-alignments were implemented to accommodate this (movement of teams up and down the minor league hierarchy) and sadly dozens of teams were kicked out of affiliated professional baseball.
-- Our former AAA team was demoted to AA, so the folks in Wichita paid for an AAA level stadium and instead wound up with an AA level team.
-- the Fresno Grizzlies were pulled down from AAA to Low A Level. They had built a AA stadium that was much newer than ours.
-- the St. Paul Saints and Sugarland Skeeters were moved up from being INDY teams to AAA level.
-- Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp were moved up from AA to AAA.
-- The Somerset Patriots were moved up from being an indy team to AA level.

NO needs to get a team in the Southern League

There’s successful minor league franchises all over the south. Why can Sugarland, Corpus Christi, Biloxi, Round Rock, El Paso, Amarillo, Frisco, OKC, Jacksonville, etc all succeed and New Orleans can’t?
The problem is a place like NO could thrive off tourists with a downtown ballpark and some effort to make it safe and family friendly.
