Tourists ain’t going to minor league baseball…

There’s regularly organized groups at games I go to that are in town for conventions. I guess they aren’t technically tourists, but they’re out of town dollars coming your way.

There’s plenty of people in various FB groups I’m in that plan baseball trips. Again, it’s not the top draw, but if you combine the lure of the Quarter with a ballpark, it could work.

I actually think a soccer team would work and draw more than any minor league baseball team ever did

A USL team has already been announced for Nola for, I think, the 2025 season.

Um, according to most posters here those 2 things are mutually exclusive. You have folks that will take the long way around to avoid driving through I-10 in New Orleans. You think they want to bring their families downtown at night to a minor-league baseball game?

And all this stuff about being an attraction for tourists is hooey. This is New Orleans, which gets bazillions of visitors who come here for music, food, drinking/partying, history, architecture, etc. Minor league baseball is not even on their list as an attraction.

Astro’s screwed the zephyrs
as did Rob Couhig who sold the team when he decided to run for office.

The two events sank the team as out-of-town majority ownership didn't really care. Walt Leger was a minority owner, but not as involved as Rob. Bringing in youngsters from all over the nation gave the kids a good education but was horrible for running a ball club in greater New Orleans.

Losing the Astros was the other nail in the coffin, especially once we were stuck with the Marlins.

The name change was a charade from the start to give another new out-of-town owner an excuse to pick up and move the team.

I was a Zephyrs season-ticket holder, then worked game day. Not that there were all that MANY, but there were ALWAYS out-of-town fans at the ball park.

The stadium has very little to with fans showing up when it’s hot and humid.

The weather did play a role but most games were at night so while hot and humid it wasn't crazy. Not having a close affiliate definitely hurt. The biggest issue was that the stadium was not easy to get to for the target demo that other cities have attracted. The younger 20-30 crowd was not going out to airline for games.

Then why does every attempt at soccer fail here?

Which attempt?

Do you think people would regularly attend non-professional baseball or basketball here?

Everything we've had here is BARELY semi-pro.

(PS - I hope USL NOLA's long term plan is NOT Metairie)

I got downvoted for saying location is a problem but it is. Minor and lower tier stadiums need to be in closer proximity to the city.

Maybe if New Orleans was a little safer…
