the south is predominately northern english and scottish. i'm about 30% irish, 25% english, 20% scottish, 6 - 8% each of norwegian, french, native american and senegalese. great grandmother was half black, half native american. im a third generation nuwalleanean. have a great grandfather from ireland. ancestry dna kit fell right in line with what i already knew. served in the military so wasn't concerned about someone else having my dna.
there are quite a few people with german ancestry in all of the late 19th century immigrant cities, new orleans being one of them.

My father always thought we were German. We have a funny spelled last name that seems like it would make more sense in German. I traced our ancestry and he has to be 98% English and Scots Irish.
What about mother’s side?
Not exactly the same issue with Britain, but if ancestor came over to the US during times around German Empire (or Prussia) they might think family from German heritage being germanized but may be from area with less german DNA and not always German like present day Poland or Alsace–Lorraine which was part of France, then German Empire, and then back to France.
Also it does seem like some of ancestry dna algorithms get updated every so often. It’s probably all those various waves of different Germanic tribes or their descendants. Mix in romans coming and going in both areas. Mix in Germany coming and going. A lot of mutts.
https://www.wired.com/story/your-ethnicity-estimate-doesnt-mean-what-you-think-it-does/
In 2015 saying white British DNA had 30% German heritage.
https://www.theguardian.com/science/2015/mar/18/genetic-study-30-percent-white-british-dna-german-ancestry
They can rerun existing with updated algorithm as they get more in, so i don’t know what current mixture is believed to be. Could high DNA German immigrants around late 19th century to early 20th century find only high dna germans to procreate with and same for next generations. What point does a german become British or vice versa particularly if already some similarities along with testing algorithm updates.

56% eng/nw europe
31% scotland
4% norway
3% indigenous mexico
2% indigenous yucatan
2% ireland
1% north africa
1% basque
Eng and ireland is up. Norway and mexico is down. Wales is gone. Yucatan is new. Maybe a few people in the yucatan got their dna done or something.

That DNA from Scandinavian groups that settled in Britain is still present today in people with English ancestry. Interestingly, people with deep family roots in eastern England, where Scandinavian people settled, tend to have higher percentages of Sweden & Denmark, and Norway in their ethnicity estimates. People with deep roots in western England or Scotland tend to have lower levels.
Shetland has had a low enough population that people leaving and Scots moving over could change things over hundreds of years, but it would be one part of Scotland with higher Norway ethnicity estimates.

I’m 95% French and 5% Islanos. I like good food and fat women.

There’s a really good book called Albion’s Seed that details the four great migrations from England and how they’ve shaped the US.

I’d like to think that last bold part you touched on really deals more with Sweden & Denmark showing up in the case of someone from Shetland.

All that is good in life, except booze. Although, they would likely prefer you refer to them as women you can GRAB. With the French in you, that may not be possible, with your delicate hands.
I have mostly 50% African, and used to be 48-49% British. The results were refreshed, and it pretty much came back as all the British genes were actually from Liverpool. I mentioned this to my uncle that just retired, and he said, yeah, you didn't know that almost all the white people in your family were from Ireland? (I'm above the age of 45.) I spent two trips to the ROI telling the Irish I was the only American that wasn't Irish, so no, I didn't know. My ability to drink and run my mouth should have been a clue, I know.
When it comes to Jewish heritage, it gets harder for Americans (or anyone that emigrated to another country during that period of time). There was a significant amount of name changing, denial of roots, etc. to try to fit in that occurred in the 1800s. 23 and Me and others have started to expose the amount of lying that has happened within families. Good or bad, I hope it teaches people just to tell the truth.

My mom is more of a mix. Still like 70% British probably

About 20 years ago it seemed most people in south Mississippi claimed some relation to Brett Favre.

Possibly.
I don’t know all the intermingling going on between Norwegians, Danish, and Swedish people as far as making up Norse DNA & culture during the early Viking colonization of the islands (including Faroe & Iceland islands) or later during the several hundred years when Orkney and Shetland were officially part of the Kingdom of Norway.
I was thinking that by the union Scotland was already pushing for its nearby islands before being given Orkney and Shetland which lessened Danish or Swedish influence during the Kalmar Union unlike with Iceland and Faroe Islands (including later union), but again I am going more on the entities involved not the make up their people.
What I know of Shetland mostly comes from the tv show and trying to figure out something mentioned on show which has touched on its Norway connections several times while mostly having a lot of murders to solve.

Yeah and I thought my last name was Irish too like everyone else, and found it is French and from a hugeonaught that Anglo-sized it to fit in.
Posted on 9/30/23 at 7:17 am to justaniceguy
British Royal family's real "last" name is Saxe-Coborg. Queen Victoria was of German background and he husband, Prince Albert was a German prince. Even the Mountbattens were mostly German.
Also Angles and Saxons were German tribes.....so all of you English types are mostly German.

It's funny because a lot of people in Louisiana who think they are Cajun are actually more German than French.
My last name is French, I would bet that most people think it’s Cajun. In reality my people are from the Alsace–Lorraine region of France that has gone back and forth between French and German rule over the centuries. As control of the region changed my last name would change from the German word to the French word, and vice versa. When my ancestor came to Louisiana directly from France they went with the French word.
Now my mom’s maiden name is Cajun French, and is on the list of original Cajun names to come down to Louisiana from Acadia.

My heritage comes from French on my moms side and Croatian on my dads side. My last name is slavic (ends in ic) so I’ve always been asked if I was Croatian.
Turns out I’m about 44% French/German, 30% British/Irish, 20% Croatian and a bunch of random shite like Scandinavian, Native American, subsaharan African, and Mongolian making up the last 6%
