At least dna tests seem to indicate that:

My father always thought we were German. We have a funny spelled last name that seems like it would make more sense in German. I traced our ancestry and he has to be 98% English and Scots Irish.

Apparently this is a common occurrence in the south for people that don’t really know where their ancestors came from (old stock Americans).

Have you traced your ancestry back?

Also, any ideas as to why this is a thing?

It's funny because a lot of people in Louisiana who think they are Cajun are actually more German than French.

My dad thought we were Scott-Irish, until one of his aunts completed a verifiable genealogy. We're from England.

So instead of saying "Germans" all the time, we should now post "British"?

The Lowland and Highland clearances led to many Scottish being forced off of their ancestral lands. Between that and religious persecution, a lot of those people wound up in Germany and the Netherlands before their descendants later moved to the New World.

Didn’t Britons comes from Germany?

If Adolph had his way they’d have gone back to being German.

Well, my grandmother and her whole side of her family is from South Africa and then they have people from Greece and the islands around that area

So, I just want to let everyone know that I’m 1/4th African American.

Don’t hate me cause i understand the rules. I didn’t make the game up.

My family is from Africa and I was born in the US. That makes me, 1/4th African American, playa!!!!!

The Britons were a mix of mostly native celts of the British Isles and Romans.

The Angles and the Saxons were tribes that lived near the sea in modern day Northern Germany, southern Denmark, and the Netherlands.

I'm 92.1% Moop. I'd describe myself as a typically swarthy-looking chap in need of a bath and a shave.

Any of the DNA companies like 23 & Me or Ancestry will break this down for you. You should also do the genealogy research. I am roughly 45% white, 40% white, 10% really white, 4% snowy white and 1% other.

The current ruling house of England was the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha until 1917 when they changed it to avoid anti-German sentiment.

And that king was a direct descendant of House Hanover, a cadet branch of House Brunswick-Lüneburg.

Even if you exclude DNA testing from the equation, in the age of the internet, it isn't that hard to figure out. I did some genealogy research back in the early 90's, and it was a lot of library time and photocopying. I got stuck 8 generations back at the first male to arrive in North America at Mobile AL on a ship from France in ~1700.

I put the research away thinking I would one day go to France and find the origin story/area. The internet comes along and a few years ago I went to some genealogy sites and now have a confirmed family line going back to ~1575 in the Morbihan region of France, complete with enhanced PDF copies from actual record books (The Catholic church is great at recording every birth, baptism, marriage, and death) along with accurate translations. My next goal is to make that trip to France and actually hold that book in my hands and see the original text. I don't know why, but as I get older, knowing these facts and ensuring their accuracy gets more important.
