A few around here see Richard Nelson as the most likely to have the political will to actually try and reform things. Probably the most likely to call a constitutional convention and decentralize state government. By most accounts, he has a bright future. Policy whiz. His age is his biggest knock, but I see that as someone with energy and a similar perspective to myself
Reads on others:
- Landry seems to echo whatever federal hot buttons currently are. Leads me to believe he’s mainly interested in federal office again.
- Waguespack seems more palatable, but very few details. Would likely be a favorite of people who made their fortunes exploiting the rules of the past 100 years at the expense of the state. (Bias alert - I don’t believe LABI to be a benevolent organization with the interests of LA anywhere near its mission). Also, nebulous DC fundraising probably comes with strings
- Schroder I’m still not convinced is actually running. May be the yatty accent, but doesn’t seem bright. I question the judgement of someone with poor policy messaging leaving a non-term limited position for an election with stronger candidates. Possibly misjudged his name recognition.
- Hewitt seems to be all-in on oil and gas messaging. Has been out of the oil and gas profession for a longer time than she was ever in it, which possibly predated email. The Ghost of Blanco will forever haunt female statewide candidates.
- Shawn Wilson is the democrat. Policy doesn’t matter.
- Xan John is in favor of steak dinners, I think.

Schroder, Hewitt and Nelson are my preferences.
Don't want Jindal's boy.
Don't really want a guy who has only weighed in on national red meat political stuff, despite now holding a state government office for almost 8 years, but can't seem to give a single statement on any sort of tax, fiscal/spending, civil service or education reform specific to Louisiana.
Both of my above "don't wants" would still be better than Shawn Freaking Wilson.
Republicans in Louisiana better not screw this one up. Wilson cannot pull the same sort of rural, old EWD Democrats votes that someone like Bel Edwards or Blanco was able to pull, so this is absolutely the GOP's race to lose.

It’d be great for Louisiana if we rallied around Nelson I think. Sends a message that we want change here. Could be seen as a “revolution” type of thing in Louisiana. He’s not a part of the LA GOP establishment and we need someone outside that club to transition this state into the future. A progressive conservative is what we need.
The same old shite just isn’t going to work anymore and Landry is a part of the good ole boy club, so it’s going to be the same old shite with him. I don’t give a rats arse about the federal government when it comes to who our governor is. He seems to like the federal government too much.

Oooh, I had several HS classmates with those last names. Nice people. Except I don't think there was an 'n' in Wag's name.

Let's not be surprised that our voters can't spell the names of those they might vote for. We've got more important things to care about, like new ways to lose population.

I recently saw a video of states losing population. La. wasn't nearly the worst but they went into reasons why people leave.
A big one for La. was that kids born here who go to college out of state never come back.
And a lot who go to college here find better job opportunities in their field elsewhere and never come back.

Yes, we have only one industry in our state, and any talk of diversifying will get you labeled a traitor to that industry and our state.

That's dumb. Congrats on more nothing

Nelson is great,

Landry will keep La's voting system honest and hope he purges all the corruption involved when NOLA reports its vote totals always last not only in Governor's election but also national elections.
We don't want to become another Atlanta, Philly, Detroit Dem corrupt cities and state.
There's enough in state corruption as it is.

Nelson is great, but doesnt have a shot. He is about low taxes, civil liberties, and reforming our bloated state govt.
Those are things the LAGOP couldnt oppose more.
Nelson is bright, and has some good ideas. He just has no shot to win, and even if he won he wouldn't accomplish much. He is the prime of example of "letting the perfect be the enemy of the good." He is unwilling to compromise even if he gets most of what he wants. He is abrasive, difficult to work with, and most legislators just don't like him.

Wilson by default is in the runoff
Highly doubt anyone is going to keep Landry out of the other spot. So whoever is running against him at this point, is just trying to pocket a little bit of extra cash before leaving office

On a certain level someone uncompromising is what is needed. Schexnayder and Cortez are essentially worthless. You want definitions of RINO??? Those guys are the poster children. I would love someone like a Nelson who would have the balls to say. " These guys are losers who come to BR to collect a paycheck and go home a little richer than when they first arrive....yeah they are just fine with the status quo....meanwhile the non politically connected get shafted. Education sucks, the business climate sucks. We peg our budget to the price of a barrel of oil. That is stupid!!!!"

I'm not disagreeing with you. The legislature is two rooms full of idiots, and Nelson's style of going into the rooms and calling them all idiots who need to listen to him because he is so smart won't lead to results.
I love many of his ideas, especially on literacy and tax policy, but to get things done you have to have allies, and he tends to alienate people.

I agree with you, however, Waguepack is going to have the money to challenge Landry. Maybe he will do the things Jindal talked about doing and not he incessant campaigning for the next job that Jindal actually did.
