re: Is the whole “veterans need special treatment” overblown?

Military family here, yes. I am all for celebrating their service and even offering hiring programs to help them transition out of the service, but lifelong benefits is bullshiat. I don't have an alternative, so I'll just shutup there.
My father in law spent an entire career with zero time deployed to any shiathole, and never saw any action at all. Spent the last decade on one spot, and after retirement essentially did his same job in civilian form...in the SAME building, for another 10 years.
Contrast that to my brother in law, who spent 25+ years in the service, was posted at some shite holes, and deployed to shitfrickistan and the likes some 6 times, and earned 2 purple hearts along the way.
These 2 scenarios should be weighed differently.

Combat vets needs TONS of help
The national guard bros that are getting paid monthly for a bad back, sleep apnea, and IBS can F off.

At what point is this just welfare? A job is a job. My job doesn’t give me free healthcare for life. Before you say cuz not dangerous etc, a lot of construction workers and electrician don’t get it either
There is a huge difference between the dangers of construction and war. I don't even believe it needs explanation.

It’s probably overblown but I’m ok with it. I don’t want the job so I’m glad someone is willing to do it.
Another example is the bucket trucks all rolling to Florida. People making comments “these are our real hero’s”
Like thank you but they aren’t doing it for free and I got a feeling they are about to make some serious overtime.

What kind of special treatment do vets really get? 10% off purchases at Lowe's? Shitty healthcare? Civilian knuckleheads saying "thank you for your service" when you know they couldn't give a shite less about it. Treating every vet like they're damaged goods is dumb.

Pitting one veteran’s service against another is a civilian thing. I don’t denigrate anyone’s service and most combat veterans would agree. My job wasn’t possible without non combat ratings.

You clearly have no idea how TRICARE works, or how retirement plays a role in what you posted

I love when you go to a ball game and the PA announcer says, "The home team would like to recognize SSgt BagofDoughnuts. He is an administrative specialist with the 753rd Data Dink Battalion."

I doubt most construction workers go to sleep with the possibility a bomb could be dropped on their bed. It probably takes a mental toll on a person. One that I'd happily spend my tax dollars to care for.
Now people who were in the army, but never saw combat... They deserve our respect, but probably a little lower on the "special treatment" scale.

I guess if you don’t value freedom

as prior service....100% but i can say with 100% confidence vets deserve special treatment before any other group especially the lgbt rainbow brigade thats for fricking sure
elderly are the same way and would be 2nd on the list of those who deserve special treatment just behind vets.

As a current member of the armed forces, I don't even disclose the fact that I'm in the military unless someone directly asks what I do for a living. I don't ask for military discounts and I don't normally use the fact that I'm in the military to board an airplane early unless I'm tired and wanting to get in my seat so I can start taking a nap.

Not saying they don’t deserve a pat on the back but people really be overselling the veteran thing. It’s a job and you did it. Not for free but for some compensation.
I DID do it, for about 20k a year in mold infested barracks rooms, seeing my family once to twice a year, and "food" that is served in prisons. When you do it, I'll respect your opinion.
ETA: I don't give a shite to about the "Thank you for your service" comments but at least don't be a cuck and say shite like you do.

And in the last 20 years, many sign up with a chance they'll see combat and die. The ones you see going to Applebee's for their free meal...are the worst Vets and game the system.
It's the ones you don't know about who need some help imo.

What? When did that change? I bought a tile saw from them maybe six months ago and got the discount.

I think they are owed respect by the government for sure. You serve our country, you get benefits. I have nothing against this.
