Yeah we can’t count a red snapper, I’m sure we have an accurate pogie count.

I don’t know much about how these boats work, but I regularly harvest fish on my catfish farm and it’s crucial that they live when I seine them up.
Is it not possible to haul these fish in without the nets killing them? I do it all the time. If it appears there is too many fish in the net and overcrowding which risk mortalities, we just let some out before they get too packed in. Granted catfish are a tough species, but there are commercial striped bass and baitfish farms that do this too.
Seems there could be better fishing practices to keep from killing so many fish if they catch too many

They aren’t keeping these fish alive. Throw them on ice as soon as they catch them

Over the last two years CCA and other groups have tried to pass legislation to regulate menhaden industry, but the governor, along with senators Bob Hensgens and Eddie Lambert have killed the bills. These guys are extremely well funded and our government officials have completely let us down. It’s embarrassing.

I dont know why CCA doesn’t fly drones over pogie operations. It’d be real easy to do and would give an accurate portrayal of the bycatch.

I hold between 500,000-1,000,000 head of 6-8 inch long catfish fingerlings in a 80 foot holding sock for 12-18 hours in 4 feet of water
without killing them.
But Pogies may die easily. If one of my ponds has shad in it, they will die in the sock but catfish won’t. Which I asked my question, because I don’t know much about pogies.

That's actually not a bad idea.
What's interesting about this is the general public does not know and does not understand the scale of the problem.
It seems someone at nola.com cares about this, getting them more content that can show the real scale of the devastation would get the general public involved.
Unfortunately our state leaders have no altruism in their bones, they will not step in out of some moral duty to preserve our state's natural beauty. They'll only do something when they think they'll lose their jobs.
