A menhaden fishing boat overwhelmed by an unexpectedly big catch let loose a massive raft of dead fish off the coast of southwest Louisiana last week, sparking outrage from conservation groups and renewed calls for tougher rules governing the state’s largest but least-regulated fishery.

Omega Protein estimates it lost about 900,000 menhaden when one of its crews cut free a bulging net less than a mile from Holly Beach in Cameron Parish on September 8. Dead fish formed a rotting mass over the weekend, drawing complaints from several charter boat captains, which target the redfish and other species that depend on menhaden for food.

I wonder how that compares to the rotting rafts of fish that the bowfishermen leave behind

Edit: the sarcasm must not have been apparent enough in my original post

Nice deflection to try and change the topic.

They need to shut this industry down. People need to lodge complaints with the US EPA & NOAA for polluting since La is clearly incapable of policing this industry.

I was being sarcastic. There’s no raft of dead fish from bowfishermen. The damage being done to the fishery doesn’t compare at all.

I can’t believe that this industry isn’t seen as universally bad. If you go fish in Breton sound in august you’ll see a ship, like 4 or 5 of those little pod net boats, and a spotter plane. They are taking the foundation of the food chain as fast and efficiently as they can and killing by catch in the process.

Thats a little extreme even for me....but they do need to push them off the coast line like every other freaking state. 3 mile barrier! Not this 1/4 to 1/2 mile bullshite...

Thats such BS, you think if a normal weekend family fisherman did something like this theyd be in jail.

But omega protein can just cut it loose and let the fish rot.

I dont even own a boat or fish and this has me pissed off. Im sure it happens more than we here.

Also, seems like we have the most lax laws concerning pogie boats, seems other states have figured it out.

LA is the Sportsman's Paradise. Fishing is one of our last amazing things left about the state. It is amazing we do not protect this at all cost and allow commercial fishermen to rule over us.

It is. It's just that Louisiana politicians are the biggest whores so they allow it to persist for the slush fund.

Every other state pushes them over three miles from the coastline (even that is too close).

Man that’s so true. It’s classic Louisiana being behind on this. Go to other states, and you’ll face sensible regulation. But come to louisiana and our resources are prime for raiding if you have the right political support.

I agree about the buffer being too close but at least if we matched other states it may take some pressure of our coastline.

Where the heck is Sierra and Greenpeace. Do they even exist anymore. I guess they only care about whales and tuna.

YEP! You can look directly at the LWF Commission (appointed by Gov) and the head of the Senate Natural Resource Committee (senator from Abbeville where Omega is located) and see why nothing is being done. CCA has actually tried to fight this one pretty hard, but the Governor won't back CCA when LDWF does not back CCA on this issue.

1. But what does Todd Masson think?

2. The only fair thing to do is to announce a study will take place. Then, they can change the red fish limit for recreational fisherman in 2029.

Someone needs to track who is getting money from these people and lets start shaming them.

Bull Reds, Tarpon, I've seen a pictures of sea turtles left in the nets and those are just species and animals that the public fawn over. What about all the other forage and predator species that these nets and operations kill?

I'd say the destruction is pretty expansive. People always want to say that it's a miniscule harm because the LA marsh ecosystem is able to produce exponential amounts. However that is all collapsing due to breeding and forage fish populations being wiped out and that vast marsh ecosystem shrinking. They will rape it until it is done and no more money to be gained.
