Just curious, but why would you take Fuente over Herman at this stage?

That makes two of us.

I'm all about Fuente and Herman, in that order. Maybe one or two others out there ... I dunno. Just sayin'.

Longevity. Herman is a great coach but I could see him bailing for the likes of Texas or Ohio State if those positions were to become open.

Fuente has shown that he will require time, which I'm fine with. Not expecting an immediate return to (relative) glory with our next HC.

The best football coach on the list is Fuente by a wide margin. Smart and Herman are sexier picks because of their connections to Bama and OSU and their recruiting prowess at those schools. However, between the white lines, Fuente is the best coach out there.

Fuente is a Patterson disciple. I don't think he's going to jump jobs just to jump. He's making 1.5 mill and probably has the most job security of any college FB coach. He'd definitely listen to SC if they come calling, but I think it will be one of the other two.

By almost a 100% majority, all the talking heads on the various college football shows yesterday had the Va. Tech position as the better of the two & second only to USCw over all. Easier division in an easier conference, good facilities & fan support & "the money will be there".

Fuente has a tenure and track record of building something.

Herman is a good coach with a good system, but he only has one year under his belt, and he took over a Houston program that was in pretty good shape. Tony Levine got fired last year after going 7-5, and his record there was 21-17. Houston has had a good track record of success over the last decade with guys like Sumlin and Briles. Inversely, Fuente took over a dead-to-rights Memphis program that was practically burned to the ground by Tommy West and Larry Porter and had them ranked in year 3 and beating Ole Miss and going undefeated in year 4.

fortunately for Ray there's already heavy influence on behalf of the Gamecocks locally in Houston.

Heard on the radio today that Strong wants out of Texas and is eyeballing the South Carolina gig and tanked the Iowa State game on purpose. I love this time of year.

I think he actually owns a Brinks train. There are rich people, then there are wealthy people, then there are "you couldn't spend all that if you tried," people. McNair is in the latter.

Good point. My only reservation about Fuente is his ability to recruit in the SEC. I know he can develop players, but talent is still king.

Shane Beamer has been contacted about his interest in the job.

Hes probably on down the list but would be an interesting option if we get there.

I think this might be a positioning thing for him to gain more favor in the Va Tech search AND possibly for us to bring him in as an Asst again. He was a solid Rec Coordinator, but he didn't do that for them, he was their AHC/RB Coach.

I haven't heard his name in our search threads on any of the boards, so I doubt there is interest either way. He's part of the Leach, Ruffin Coaching Tree, and with some speed he can make a great offense. Right now, OU is 14th nationally in Total Offense. He's making a good name for himself, but I don't think he's what we're looking for in a HC right now.
