Been following it in National Review.

Have to say, anything that ticks off college Profs can't be too bad. They have way too much power.

Don't want to see UT academics hurt, but some of these tenured guys and gals, need a wake up call.

At big schools, many academics need to accept the facts that:

1. The football program is self-supporting (obviously this only applies to a handful of schools, but Texas is one).
2. The athletic program often - and at Texas does - give money to the academic side.
3. Generally, academic donations go up when the athletic programs are successful.

Cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

Agreed. After the 1992 championship Bama got a completely rebuilt Business school.

The recent football success has coincided with a completely rebuilt Engineerig school.

That's not a coincidence.

Not so fast....What if Saban and Witt demand Horns break w/B12 to be placed in SEC west, then Fla State to SEC east

Are you kidding? Saban's trying to get the hell away from LSU and Auburn, so he can go to the Big Soft and pound Stoops' arse every year, go undefeated and lose to an SEC team in the playoffs.

Profit.

Actually there is hearing soon about the performance of the President at UT. His job could be in trouble.

They'll get in line and like it or frick them.

There will always be tension between academics and athletics at big schools - maybe some more than others. The academic side at Texas at least needs to remember the tens of millions of dollars (mostly LHN money) that's pouring into the academic side in the coming years.

Absolutely. Who gives a shite about academics, intellectual pursuit, and the core mission of a state university? It's all about football.
Oh, by the way, the U of Texas endowment dwarfs the LHN.

Clearly, you missed my laughing icon. Which one do I need to use to show that I don't seriously think that the academics should be told to "frick off."

But if you went and asked all of the faculty members at UT the question of who pays the entirety of the football coaches salary then more than a few would say "the University." And they would be wrong. Having an excellent football team , like it or not, is a net win for the academic side.

I was told that UT recently raised $3 billion in donations to the school. And most of the money came from the same wealthy donors who will bankroll Saban.

So the academics shouldn't care how some billionaires spend their money

It is true that there has been political conflict between Powers and Perry. That is not new information to anyone who is connected to UT. But I haven't heard anything about Powers leaving in the near term. If that is true, it would be serious inside information.

1. I'm a professor, so you can take that as an advantage or a disadvantage.

2. What's going on at Texas is about Rick Perry trying to change the mission of the university in pretty dramatic ways. No one has every complained about the performance of their president, as far as I'm aware, but he certainly resists what Perry's trying to do. You can Google it easily.

3. UT is an elite university. If they raised $3billion, you can give some credit for that to the president.

Most important, 4. Bringing in a football coach along with a president would be beyond bizarre. No way that rumor is true -- except that Texas politics is batshit crazy.
