You might as well add Yale and Harvard too since the landscape of football never changes.

I would put LSU in the 6 to 8 range as best jobs in the country.

The population in Florida has changed dramatically in past 35 years. Since late 1980's, FSU has been stronger than LSU by and large. We pay our assistants more, and have less competition for in state recruiting, so LSU currently has more potential, IMO.

Ohio State and USC ought to be in there. LSU not quite the same as the schools you mentioned.

osu is top tier only if you're from the rustbelt. it's the top program up north but that's it.

usc is second tier especially now with the nfl returning to town. plus you have terrible traffic, terrible campus location, terrible facilities, mediocre conference, mediocre fanbase, mediocre salary, and high taxes.

in other breaking news, water is wet.

also, uf isn't even a top 10 all time program.

I've been to USC several times. It's a far cry from an SEC experience, but that's true of Most PAC 12 teams, except maybe Washington. The campus is beautiful, the Coliseum is an outstanding stadium, band is great, song girls, and you're in SoCal. Agree to disagree with you on that one.

They have by far the best facilities in the country, an awesome stadium, great fan base and a prominent booster that will pay 10mil a year for a coach.

Barely top 50 though huh?

How about give me 35 universities that are better. Should be easy if they're barely top 50. Oregon's overall winning percentage is under .600, which is mediocre at best.

The OP said "historically," so my statement is accurate.

i'm surprised at the ignorance in this post Stevo. not one of the programs you listed got the first coach they wanted in their search. every one of them had to go down the line and settle on a lower choice.

my point is that being a top five program historically doesn't have a thing to do with our coaching search. LSU is at or near a top 5 program but top coaches make virtually the same money where they are now.

You'll notice my title thread included the present as well as the past. Historical basis counts for things like program support and resources. Michigan, for instance, was down a very long time, but I believe everyone still considered them a top 5 program. Sure enough, Harbaugh has them back.

LSU has more NCs in the last fifteen years than all but Alabama, Florida and tOSU from that list

In terms of revenue LSU is top five. In terms of recruiting LSU is top five.

What LSU lacks is a top five head coach.

LSU pays more, has a better stadium, a better fan base, a top 10 (maybe top 5) state all to itself and it's in the SEC. That's why it's better than FSU.

The "in the SEC" argument really doesn't mean anything anymore. If anything I'd argue it's better to be a Clemson or an FSU as you only have to win that game each year, and you're in. The playoff has diminished the need to be from the absolute best conference in the land. If you're at a top school in one of the better conferences, you'll be fine.

Quality of players makes it better than Michigan. There's a reason why Jim H wants so damn desperately to set up satellite camps in the SEC states. Better athletes.

In a year Harbaugh will turn that roster over and have it humming like a well-oiled machine. It will be the same thing Ohio State did with Meyer. Those programs recruit the entire country. You could make an argument that the Michigan helmet and uni is below only things like the Yankee pinstripes and the Cowboy star as the most iconic imagine in all of sports let alone college football. I love LSU, but it's brand will never touch Michigan's, period.
