To actually fire him 1/1/16 would not be feasible. But when George Bass starts the bidding at "pay Miles $15 million," the first counter by LSU would be "fine, we'll let you twist in the wind for three weeks while the media crushes your legacy." He'd actually be gone immediately, but termination dated later. Could work or not, but it's a strong ploy, and could hold up if challeged (it's essentially the basis of the Chavis suit). It's all just a negotiation at this point.

And you think LSU is going to wait until January 1st to put pen to paper on a new coach's contract? You're dumber than I thought.

Just glad someone is sharing something. I would be ok to call those our coaches with Frank being groomed as HC in waiting or a similar capacity.

You're a gentleman and a scholar, sir. Your presence in the world of celebrity blogging is sorely missed.

As for the issue of a hypothetical Miles termination date from another poster, I think it's important to note that not every negotiating tactic need actually be acted upon. It need only be plausibly threatened. If George Bass (or the litigator he hired to try the case) ever actually got far enough to do anything with his nuts in a courtroom, it would likely be the end of Miles' coaching career as other schools may not want the headache of a litigious head coach with some baggage. Miles may rather settle for a $12.9 starting point on negotiations, and keep alive his chance to coach Maryland, then get every penny and never coach another down of football.

Its just point, counterpoint, back and forth between two parties. Points are made and they either convince someone or not. Often has nothing to do with what you can eventually prove in court two years from now.

I would caution, Random said it isn't exactly over. These things can turn in the blink of an eye. Lots of factors at play, most likely.

Here is Miles's contract. It has been extended, but I do not believe the actual language has changed for anything else.

Contract

Based on a pretty plain reading of it, it would actually be more expensive to fire him after the first of the year. Yes, the buyout drops from $15M to $12.9, but the buyout is reduced by the amount paid to Les in the year he has terminated per Section 13(a)(iv). So the starting point is 10.7 million - not 15 assuming we actually paid him his salary this year.

That would be further reduced by the alternative employment clause and a present value discount for the 8 years to pay the buyout. Lump sum, you're probably looking at 5 to 6 million.

And maybe a new coach would see the way LSU's admin was dicking around a successful coach that brought tons of money to the school and decide to tell them no thanks. Meanwhile, the only thing the dicking around AD has to show for his efforts are two lawsuits against two former coaches, one upwards of 15 million, no coach, and trying to explain to a pissed off board how shite went so wrong. If the AD didn't have the 15 million, he's already screwed the pooch. This isn't the time to be dickering around about money nor trying to negotiate on two fronts. You wanted Miles gone? Fine, but get him out of your hair and move on. Your weakness is already shown to Jimbo and he owns us. He's gonna get what he wants. To believe LSU has any real negotiating power is lost at this point.
