With the new bowl design they don't need aTm as much as aTm needs SMU. Think of it how Memphis bailed on Arkansas. They now can play Wake NC ST IU or a school like that for their P5 win and climb. They're not looking to get into CFBP right now just the group of 6. SMU will make the money now they are getting the 80's guys back in the fold and bowl games. aTm needs name wins to win a NC and SMU does provide that somewhat, so I know it's hard to understand because aTm thinks they're the big hitter.
aTm needs a Texas school still but it isn't going to be SMU.
If TCU still climbs then SMU and TCU will revive.

WTF are you talking about? Why does A&M need to play SMU at all? We can get cheap easy wins against G5 Texas schools for days w/o SMU.
and at saying SMU gives us a potential name win. In the next 5 years we're gonna go for those vs Arizona State '15, UCLA '16-'17, and Clemson '18-'19. We've also set up a Notre Dame series for '24-'25.
Hell, RICE was a bigger win than SMU for A&M the last two years as they won CUSA last year and will be in a bowl this year.
Look man, I like SMU and wish them the best but come the hell on.

if A&M were to beat SMU and win a national title, a good SMU team (not this year) would be about the 12th best name they'd play
LSU, Bama, Auburn, Arkansas, Miss, Miss St., East team in SEC title, East team, 2nd East team if not Kentucky or Vandy, playoff team 1, playoff team 2, prob. one other good nonconference game
so even if good, SMU is little better than a cupcake

Do you understand what a name win is?
I guess you don't. Like I said SMU doesn't need aTm. What part of business and rebuild do you not get?
How did Jackie start rebuilding? He scheduled a lower tier name schools, like BC instead of PITT Penn St etc.
It's the same formula.

Yes I get what a name win is an currently Rice is just as big a name as SMU. I'm sorry but they are. SMU is not moving the needle for anyone on a playoff committee. On top of that, now that A&M is finally a few seasons away from having to replace 2 OOC games they are getting back to playing a P5 team every year. They don't need SMU for a "name" win at all.
Also, SMU isn't really changing their scheduling up all that much. 2012 and 2013 were more exceptions to the rule of how y'all schedule and were only set up to have 3 SWC schools each year b/c June was supposed to have y'all on the hunt for the G5 BCS/Access bowl spot. Next year you go right back to TCU and a money game vs a P5 (Baylor "15-'16, Michigan '18) like y'all always do.

That's why I am saying they don't need aTm going to Michigan Baylor TCU they don't need aTm any more.
Michigan would be better win for SMU and they beat TCU or Baylor they are exactly where they want to be.
You seem to forget the new bowl system rewards SMU more than aTm if they win out. aTm wants a nc SMU wants a group of 6.

You said A&M needs SMU more than SMU needs A&M and that aint true.
Again, A&M is one of the only teams that can sell 30k+ tickets in Ford and one of the few P5 that will even make the trip.
Michigan ain't coming down to do that with y'all and you already backed out of one of the Baylor games last year at the last minute which probably pissed them off long term. TCU hasn't even committed to playing you guys past 2018.

Look at it from SMU POV then you'll understand what I'm trying to convey. They don't need aTm as much as you want to think.
SMU will play national lower games and climb to get into a g6 bowl.

It would have helped to cover had we played them and gotten the record inflating W. SMU is like Tulane- takes a good coach to win there but good coaches do win there.

Slightly different when you have to play an SEC schedule during your dumpster fire seasons

Yea, you have to play modest P5 teams; not bad ones, but not great ones either. tulane had a good schedule in that regard this year; just didn't have the team to capitalize.

That would be a solid hire. It's a great opportunity as a starting HC gig. Plenty of great HC have started out at smaller schools. And Texas has plenty of talent for him to recruit to at least win the conference.
