can someone exlplain slolem skiing to me?

Before this board disappears. The red and blue sticks, some of which are ignored, has always confused me. I know the other ski events are based on the number of gates/flags, but why are only some of the slolem gates used and others are ignored?

Do they have a choice as to which gates they go around?

I think they have a choice.

Alternate red then blue, but there is only one way down that is the fastest.

That's what I figured, but I don't understand why anyone would choose the gates on the fringes of the course.

What if a moose or something made his way on the course?

But agree with original question, I assumed that was the answer...

They don't go around the gates, they go between them. No, they don't have a choice. Blue is for right hand turns, red for left. The rules for slalom gates are the same as any other ski racing discipline, but the gates themselves are made differently. They are flexible at the base so the skier can just knock them down by punching them.

Here are all the rules (PDF file -- slalom is on page 85).

None of the sticks are ignored, it's just that the fastest way usually takes you much closer to some than others. What's probably the thing that's most confusing (and least obvious in a slalom, as opposed to other events) is that the rules don't say 'go around the pole', they say 'go through the gate', and in slalom the course is so tight that the arrangement of poles is very confusing to look at.

Racers must go between the two poles that constitute a single gate. It's not real explicit in that PDF, but I'm fairly sure that there's no required direction. Obviously when a gate is set across the hill they want to go through it going down, but when gates are set vertically, they can go through in either direction. There's usually only one way that will be fast enough to win, though -- remember, the top 10 finishers can easily be within a half second, total.

The red and blue just alternate so everyone can more easily pick out the pair of poles that go together.

By the way, if anybody cares -- the blue lines on the courses are not official in any way at all; they're just so the racers can see the direction of the course. Flat light on a solid white ground makes depth perception very tough.

Deadspin has a good writeup that doesn't get into the specifics of rules, but makes the races more understandable (and they have other good writeups of various aspects of ski racing)

As others have said already, the colored poles define a gate.

So you would have something like:

..R---------R
............B-------B
.....R------R
..............B------B

If you wanted, you can go through the gate anywhere between the two poles of the same color. however, since you want to go through the course as fast as possible, you take the most direct line, which in the example above would to get as close as possible to the bolded "poles" above. As long as your skis go to the correct side, your body can pretty much run over/through the pole.

Is this where instead of against the clock, one goes up against Slow Lem?
