Employees gave me a GC to Academy and getting a new baitcaster for bass and maybe a little spec fishing. Budget is up to $200. Narrowed TO these 3

Abu Garcia Revo Sx
Lews Mach 2 Spool SLP MH2SH
Shimano Calcutta 200B

What say the OB?

I'm shamelessly a huge fan of Shimano as I have so many and they all work wonderfully.

With that said, the Calcutta.

I have two Calcuttas over 20 yrs old. They're still in use, while many lesser reels have been retired.

Always go with shimano. I have half a dozen Calcutta’s and unless they starting making them cheaper that’s way to go

Lew’s Are good reals also. Don’t think you can go wrong with any of these 3.

A year ago I decided to really get back into fishing. Over the past year I have been tinkering with different rods/reel set ups, and it kind of became a hobby in itself. With that being said, I have tried a lot of the $150-$225 reels and the higher end Shimano stuff.

I am not a fan of the Abu Garcia reels. To me, the Lew's and the Shimano reels just seem to be better performance and quality wise.

The Calcutta's are bulletproof, but also heavy IMO.

I bought one of the newer Curado K's recently and I think it would be the perfect reel for you. It can throw lighter baits, heavier baits and is the perfect all around size. It has the micro module gearing which makes the retrieve super smooth. MSRP is $179. Shimano went all out on this reel for the price IMO.

Go to the store and see what feels best. If you buy one and don't like it, Academy has a great return policy.

Shimano is always the answer. The ones I have are built like tanks.

I’ve had a few abus that didn’t hold up well at all and I know lews get a lot of love but they just seem cheap to me.

Another vote here for a low profile baitcaster instead of that Calcutta. Shimano Curado K would be my vote.

If you are using it for saltwater, make sure to rinse them really good after saltwater use.

With that budget, I’d get a Lews Custom Speed Spool. Don’t know if they carry it in store. If you can use the GC online you could order it.

This is currently my favorite baitcast. It just feels really strong and solid in my hand, especially on hook sets. Plus with the bigger spool you can cast it a mile.

The Super Duty is fantastic. The only negative is that it’s a little on the heavy side. And it’s not that heavy.

I have a super duty as well and can vouch that it’s an awesome reel. However I feel like it won’t throw a 1/8oz jig head as well as the Curado K. Mine is my frog rod.

I dont own one so i cannot comment, but ive held the slp framed reels from lews and the Lews custom inshore with sealed bearings at $200 seems like a good deal.
I have a 13 concept A that I really like and I would consider the new curado 70. i like how low profile both of these reels are.

Thought of that, but I don’t see it on academy’s website.

I have been married to Shimano for many years, but some of their latest curado models almost led to a divorce. It would be above your price range but I would buy the best and only cry once with a chronarch
