re: What are the best private schools in BR? - JB14 on 3/29/14 at 10:45 pm
No basis, just my experience knowing kids from the various schools. I don't pretend to have undertaken any "investigation." Good kids with good parents will do fine, no matter where they're in school, imo. ...Jump to Post - View Topic - Replies (1)
re: Old Fashioned? Tips for ordering at a bar? - JB14 on 3/1/14 at 8:41 pm
I prefer a Blanton's or Woodford Old Fashioned. If you're at a suspect establishment, I'd specify "no soda water," as well. Usually, it's pretty clear watching the bar-tender make the OF if he knows what he's doing. Makes a huge difference, IMO, whether he uses simple syrup or actually reduces ...Jump to Post - View Topic - Replies (1)
re: So the Nkemdiche situation... - JB14 on 2/21/14 at 1:04 am
Forgive me if I missed it, but what is plaintiff's cause-of-action? IIED? NIED? Re Forum-Non We've only studied it in an international context (Piper v. Reyno, I think), but I've heard it was somewhat common back in the heyday of MS mass tort litigation in the mid-90's to early 2000's. T...

re: Jeep Wrangler Unlimited? - JB14 on 2/15/14 at 9:32 pm
I've got a '12 unlimited with 35's, 4.10 gearing and a 4" TeraFlex lift. Drive across the length of Mississippi (~6hours) pretty regularly, and remain happy. Absolutely cannot talk on cell-phone (soft-top) while on interstate, though....Jump to Post - View Topic - Replies (0)
re: Why are so many Southerners so stuck in their ways? - JB14 on 2/11/14 at 12:23 am
Well, that would make sense given an original publication date in the early 40's. Obviously Cash can't have anticipated the changes from 1940-2014, but I'd be hard-pressed to find a book that better answer's OP's question re the reason the South, from its inception, was viewed as "different."...Jump to Post - View Topic - Replies (1)
re: Why are so many Southerners so stuck in their ways? - JB14 on 2/11/14 at 12:11 am
What is it that has shaped the south to become so much different than the rest of the country?
Originally? A shared frontier ethos and the Proto-Dorian bond. See W.J. Cash, "Mind of the South." ...Jump to Post - View Topic - Replies (2)
re: What is Mississippi good at? - JB14 on 1/29/14 at 11:58 pm
As far as literature goes, Stark Young merits inclusion. His So Red the Rose was Gone with the Wind before Gone with the Wind. Also notable for being one of the "12 Southerners" / Southern Agrarians who contributed to I'll Take My Stand. Sadly, even people who "know" southern li...Jump to Post - View Topic - Replies (0)
re: What is Mississippi good at? - JB14 on 1/29/14 at 11:53 pm
If I recall correctly, Percy is originally from Birmingham. Moved to Greenville, MS after a family tragedy and was raised by William Alexander Percy, an outstanding author in his own right. Though much of his work is set in LA, and Percy lived in Covington during his later years, his chief inf...Jump to Post - View Topic - Replies (0)
re: Post some pictures of the best houses from your hometown - JB14 on 1/18/14 at 7:32 pm
Good deal. I had the opportunity to work with a bunch of Delta writers primary materials in undergrad and remember hearing a lot about Mount Holly in Shelby Foote's writing. Always wanted to visit, but haven't had the time......Jump to Post - View Topic - Replies (1)
re: SECrOTB Book Club: I need a good book to read - JB14 on 1/11/14 at 9:48 pm
For some reason, I found "the Judge" one of the most unforgettable characters I've ever encountered in literature. Not necessarily good/bad, just fascinating. ...Jump to Post - View Topic - Replies (1)
re: SECrOTB Book Club: I need a good book to read - JB14 on 1/11/14 at 9:27 pm
I really enjoyed it, but the plot is pretty gruesome--an impressionable kid falling in with a band of 19th Century outlaws traveling across the West committing unspeakable acts of violence . McCarthy's writing is unbelievable if you can get past the horror of it all. It's the only McCarthy I'v...Jump to Post - View Topic - Replies (0)

re: Memphis recs- Not BBQ - JB14 on 10/4/13 at 11:06 pm
East Memphis: Folk's Folly; Hog & Hominy; Downtown: Flight, McEwen's, Spindini, Majestic Grille; Itta Benna; Mid-Town: Iris; Beauty Shop; SweetGrass; Local (hit/miss); Really depends on what/where you prefer to eat. A lot of options outside of BBQ....Jump to Post - View Topic - Replies (0)
re: So it looks like I might be moving to Memphis - JB14 on 8/12/13 at 10:37 pm
I'm pretty young and would enjoy some night life. Mid town good for that?
It's definitely on the rise. Cooper-Young area, though it sometimes draws a (how should I say it?) cosmopolitan crowd, offers a bunch of options, both food and drink. If Overton Square continues...Jump to Post - View Topic - Replies (2)
