re: What are the best private schools in BR? - JB14
No basis, just my experience knowing kids from the various schools. I don't pretend to have undertaken any "investigation." Good kids with good parents will do fine, no matter where they're in school, imo. ...

re: Old Fashioned? Tips for ordering at a bar? - JB14
I prefer a Blanton's or Woodford Old Fashioned. If you're at a suspect establishment, I'd specify "no soda water," as well. Usually, it's pretty clear watching the bar-tender make the OF if he knows what he's doing. Makes a huge difference, IMO, whether he uses simple syrup or actually reduces ...

re: So the Nkemdiche situation... - JB14
Forgive me if I missed it, but what is plaintiff's cause-of-action? IIED? NIED? Re Forum-Non We've only studied it in an international context (Piper v. Reyno, I think), but I've heard it was somewhat common back in the heyday of MS mass tort litigation in the mid-90's to early 2000's. T...

re: Jeep Wrangler Unlimited? - JB14
I've got a '12 unlimited with 35's, 4.10 gearing and a 4" TeraFlex lift. Drive across the length of Mississippi (~6hours) pretty regularly, and remain happy. Absolutely cannot talk on cell-phone (soft-top) while on interstate, though....

re: Why are so many Southerners so stuck in their ways? - JB14
Well, that would make sense given an original publication date in the early 40's. Obviously Cash can't have anticipated the changes from 1940-2014, but I'd be hard-pressed to find a book that better answer's OP's question re the reason the South, from its inception, was viewed as "different."...

re: Why are so many Southerners so stuck in their ways? - JB14
What is it that has shaped the south to become so much different than the rest of the country?
Originally? A shared frontier ethos and the Proto-Dorian bond. See W.J. Cash, "Mind of the South." ...

re: What is Mississippi good at? - JB14
As far as literature goes, Stark Young merits inclusion. His So Red the Rose was Gone with the Wind before Gone with the Wind. Also notable for being one of the "12 Southerners" / Southern Agrarians who contributed to I'll Take My Stand. Sadly, even people who "know" southern li...

re: What is Mississippi good at? - JB14
If I recall correctly, Percy is originally from Birmingham. Moved to Greenville, MS after a family tragedy and was raised by William Alexander Percy, an outstanding author in his own right. Though much of his work is set in LA, and Percy lived in Covington during his later years, his chief inf...

re: Post some pictures of the best houses from your hometown - JB14
Good deal. I had the opportunity to work with a bunch of Delta writers primary materials in undergrad and remember hearing a lot about Mount Holly in Shelby Foote's writing. Always wanted to visit, but haven't had the time......

re: SECrOTB Book Club: I need a good book to read - JB14
I really enjoyed it, but the plot is pretty gruesome--an impressionable kid falling in with a band of 19th Century outlaws traveling across the West committing unspeakable acts of violence . McCarthy's writing is unbelievable if you can get past the horror of it all. It's the only McCarthy I'v...

re: So it looks like I might be moving to Memphis - JB14
I'm pretty young and would enjoy some night life. Mid town good for that?
It's definitely on the rise. Cooper-Young area, though it sometimes draws a (how should I say it?) cosmopolitan crowd, offers a bunch of options, both food and drink. If Overton Square continues...
