He hired him as a recruiter. He was not DC. Kirby took that job from him in 2008 after Steele failed in 2007.
And yet he was paid more than Kirby? ...
After Steele was fired from Clemson as DC and re-hired by Saban, he didn't even get the co-DC back.
That's what you do when you want someone on board but don't have a spot for them at that time. It's actually, like, a compliment. ...
That wasn't him, he was fired the previous year
He left early 2012. He had coached that defense since 09, so he gets no credit for that win later in the year? Was the scheme really that different?...
I find myself defending this hire who I know little about solely because the opposition is so bone-stupid. ...

You're gonna get a lot of shite for this thread but pretty much every response is idiocy so far. Saban's season prior to his hire was 6-6. Before that 7-5, then 6-6, then 6-5-1. These idiots keep saying he was successful there (overall 58% win rate) - THE SAME ONES THAT BASH LES FOR WINNING 10...

These people are either too young or too stupid to recall correctly. You're right. I was at LSU then and the consensus was definitely WTF? although after Dinardo's decline we were happy enough with anything. ...
So bitching about hiring a guy at DC who has failed at DC at two other places is synonymous with bitching about hiring a guy who was a winner at his last gig?
Saban was 58% at MichSt. Winning? Barely. ...
defenses at Clemson were some of the worst in the country.
They beat us. :dunno:...
Plus, iirc no one did great for LSU in that game. It wasn't just Harris. There were dropped passes, run often stopped short, and the defense wasn't gelled. ...
