We want to be able to do things like hike, maybe be around a touristy town to do some shopping other activities. Maybe around a spa? Where would a good spot be?

Estes Park, CO. Fantastic hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. Touristy town with all kinds of crap to buy. Not too far out of Denver. My family went there every summer for 25 years or so. If it's after peak tourist season check with the YMCA camp to see if they have any cabins available. Forget about it during the summer.

I came to suggest Estes Park so I second that post.
I hear great things about Sedona too, but RMNP is tough to beat ANY time of year.

Santa Fe has some great places to rent on the north side of town, away form the plaza but close enough to get into town easily. Great hiking off Ski Basin road. Taos area too

Flagstaff, AZ

Easier to find cabins there than in Sedona.

Can drive the 30 minutes to Sedona as well to explore. Drive down Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona(gorgeous drive...especially with the fall colors)

Can hike in Sedona and Flagstaff. Flagstaff has a really cool little downtown area as well to walk around. Several breweries as well to check out(most located in their downtown area and within walking distance of one another).

Also...if you are in Flagstaff...you are only a couple hours away from the Grand Canyon.

Also in Flagstaff is Flagstaff Extreme. It's a huge ropes obstacle course high up in the treetops(you zipline as well). A lot of fun and worth checking out.

I wouldnt stay in flagstaff if I wanted to spend that much time in Sedona. If you want to spend the majority of your time in Sedona stay in Sedona or somewhere like the Junipine in Oak Creek.
