What would you do with a (basically) free flight voucher?

While flying last weekend I volunteered to miss my scheduled flight for one later in the day and got an $800 voucher credit. I'm not a big traveler but do fly maybe twice a year. I've got 3 options I'm kicking around and want some input for what you personally would do.
1) Use it on an already planned trip and upgrade. I've never flown anything other than coach before. Trips that I know for sure I will be taking soon are a trip to the west coast in the spring and a trip to chicago in fall of '17 for football. I could use the voucher to fly first class on either one of those.
2) Use it on an unplanned trip for a fun getaway. Since the flight would be free, I could basically just take a long weekend to visit somewhere I haven't been before. Drawbacks here would be that I'd likely go by myself, and despite free airfare you'd still be looking at lodging, food, drink, entertainment, etc that I would be spending that wouldn't have been planned previously
3) Just splurge my arse off and go to Europe or something. I've never left the country and I'm honestly a bit anxious of flying over the ocean. But I would like to see europe some day before I die, and obviously flights there are one of the big expenses. Knocking $800 off the fare would be huge. This is the least likely of the scenarios though.
So wwyd in this situation?

quote:For 800 you could certainly find a flight... I mean we post here all the time flying out of New Orleans the flights are under 800, sure Atlanta it will be cheaper.

Another vote for Europe. Go to Ireland even for three or four nights. The flights from the US to Dublin or Shannon Airport there are generally the cheapest for European travel.
Don't use the voucher to upgrade, if a person flies weekly for work or on flights over 10 or 12 hours, this would matter. For a five or six hour flight (BOS-DUB for example), it's nice but not necessary. For anything less, it's robbery.
Good luck!

Wow $800! Whst leg did you volunteer to get bumped off of?
Another vote for option 2 or 3 btw. You can easily find flights to europe under $800 these days. Which airline is the voucher for?

Delta.
I was supposed to fly to boston at ~12:30 and volunteered to fly out around 4:30 instead. That flight was delayed so actually didn't leave til closer to 6:15.
Absolutely worth it though.

I hope it's spirit
OP, I'd use it to go to europe or for multiple trips in the US over the next year.

Definitely 1 or 3 depending on your annual leave and work situation. If you can get the time off and can afford to go to Europe, definitely Europe. If you don't have the time off or are trying to save money instead of spend, would be a cool experience to upgrade to first class for free

Had the same situation happen to me a few weeks ago. There were three of us, and we had to take the next flight out from LA to Vancouver and we each got $800 for giving up our seat. Absolutely worth it.
Use it to go to Europe. Florence, Rom and Amalfi Coast. Depending on your age, it wouldn't even matter if you went by yourself. If you were willing to stay in hostels you will meet all kinds of 20-30 Year olds and have the time of your life.

2 or 3
Don't use it to upgrade. I upgraded to first class on one flight when I checked in...only because it cost me an extra $50 to do so. Totally worth $50...but not worth several hundred more imo.

2 or 3 would be my choice. Also I wouldn't worry about traveling alone. I've done it for business many times... It's great. You get to do exactly what you want to do.

Go to Europe. I'm probably around your age and haven't left the country other than Canada or the Caribbean. Going to Europe in a month and just researching everything has already been worth the money on a plane ticket. I'm beyond excited
And nice on the voucher. I got offered 1100 a couple of years ago on a snowy thanksgiving eve but I wouldn't have made it home had I taken it.
