Hey all, the last several years the wife and I have done a late October trip to Playa del Carmen. This year, we are expecting baby #2 so the resorts are out of the question (not worth it without alcohol).

Since we aren't doing an all inclusive and are trying to save some cash due to upcoming expenses, we are looking for a relatively budget friendly weekend trip (early November). Looking at either NYC or DC (or any other suggestions?) as both are very accessible with reasonable flight cost from CLT.

She hasn't been to DC since middle school and we've never been to NYC together, so both would be cool. Don't need an exhaustive agenda as we will only be there 48 hours, probably go to one nice dinner. We aren't foodies, so I am sure there are great options at both.

I'm leaning DC, due to easy access from DCA and my relative familiarity with the City. Thoughts?

So for 2 days in November, where's the better quick getaway with the wife.

I would lean DC as well. NY is just so overwhelmingly large that two days isn't enough unless you're going for something specific (a Broadway play you really want to see, for example).

And not to make it more complicated, but I'd also recommend Boston. It's a much smaller city, and you can cover a lot of it in a couple days' time.

That's my honest opinion as well. I don't care about "doing" too much at either place. The big bonus for DC is that I can be at our hotel in 30 mins after touching down, vs NYC (especially flying to JFK) where transit isn't as easy.

I'm sure we will spend most of one day at Smithsonians vs shopping in NYC

If you’re budget conscious, DC is a much better choice. Way cheaper hotel options, many free museums and attractions, and cheap public transit.

Both are good trips

NYC for the adventure
DC for historical perspective

agree with both of these ideas. i prefer NYC over DC, but for just a short trip, DC is better.

Go early Nov if NYC as it gets really expensive during and after Thanksgiving.

A hop on hop off will give you a great perspective inc history.
See the 09/11 Memorial and go to the top of Freedom Tower.
Have a drink at the top of the Marriott Marquis (revolving Restaurant/lounge
Great cheap places to eat in Chinatown and Little Italy
One of my favorite places to eat (fairly reasonable for NC) is Bond 45 right off Broadway in the Times Square.
See a show. If you aren't picky, there are several TKTS locations where you can pick up discounted tickets (many half price) day of show.
All this can be done in 48 hours. Have done it many times
