getting out of dodge for thanksgiving and heading to DC for a week with the wife and kids (9 , 7 and 5).
Looking for recs on museums, places to eat, sites to see and hotels.
Plan on doing some of the popular spots off tripadvisor.
Looking for specific rec's on what you may think would be good for our family and specific ages.
Already booked the flight, also looking for hotel recommendations. Was looking just north of the national mall, but, open to other ideas.
Thanks in advance!!

Food wise - we eat almost anything, kids are picky, but we are open to anything. I've been to Old Ebbit's and would like to go there again. Looking for can't miss places.
Hotel price wise- thinking $250 a night and under, don't want to break the bank on a hotel, but, don't want a roach motel in a bad part of town. Would like something we can walk to the National Mall and some of the museums if possible.

There is a Hampton Inn in Alexandria VA right on King St that is a very short walking distance to the metro. My wife and I loved Alexandria and will definitely stay there again. Once we got off the plane we took the metro to King St and was able to use the metro to go anywhere we wanted. Also, there is a free trolley at the entrance of the Hampton Inn that took you all around Alexandria. The hotel also has free breakfast in the morning. I will stay there every time I go to DC.

Hotels in Penn Quarter put you close to the Mall, close to all the major metro lines, and within walking distance of many evening options. Check the various Smithsonian museums' calendars of events--evening IMAX shows, special presentations, after hours stuff, will be listed on those. Food wise, the Mall is kind of a bust. The best museum food is at the Nat'l Native American museum, with lots of interesting choices. Air & Space, Natural History are more McDonalds/extremely kid centric cafeteria stuff. National Gallery has an underground food area between the contemporary building & the "original" national gallery (which are on opposite sides of a street). It's a relatively quiet place to have a rest & eat gelato (ie, not completely overrun with schoolkids like most of the museum food areas).
Definitely walk the Mall in the evening--all of the Monuments are beautifully lit. The DC Circulator bus around the Mall takes you to all of the highlights. Don't overlook the FDR and MLK memorials, which are less visited but still very compelling. Both can stimulate great conversations with kids who may have never really thought about WWII, civil rights, etc.
The National Portrait Gallery (not on the mall) is another good one for kids--it's easy to understand art when it's mostly pictures of people, and to enjoy the many approaches to essentially the same task: portraying a face.

This is good advice.

Was thinking of a hotel walking distance from the national mall area / monuments, was trying to avoid taking the metro to and from each day with 3 small kids. Probably wouldn't be a big deal taking metro i guess.

I'm going there for vacation next week. I can post some reviews of things when I get back.

We are also going to be in DC for Thanksgiving. Found a good place on AirBnB. For a week with 3 kids, I'd definitely take a look at doing that over a hotel room.

I've been to Old Ebbit's
Hotel Harrington is cheap-ish and in an awesome location.
Foodwise here are some solid spots
Zaytinya
Graffiato
Jaleo

Ended up booking the JW Marriot.
Those restaurant suggestions look great, just worried about one of my kids being a very picky eater. But, we always have to worry about that so we can make due or get her something elsewhere.

Le diplomate is a good spot even for picky eaters. It's a French brasseriewith a huge menu and if all else fails they have fries

We've always enjoyed going to Mt Vernon

I was looking at a river cruise to Mt Vernon, but, it stops in October. Anyone had luck getting there by boat in late November? Would like to go by boat to see the river from that view.

You should strongly consider staying at the Phoenix Park Hotel. It is across from Union Station at the corner of Massachusetts and Capitol. You have easy Metro access and you can walk to the Mall.
I've stayed there many times, and it is so close to everything.
Take a day trip to Annapolis. It is a cool town.

+1 on this.
I think Annapolis is one of the most underrated towns in the country.

And if you don't have a car (I.e. flying in) you can rent one at Union Station for the day, take the 20 min drive to Annapolis, and then return it.
That's why I'd stay at the Phoenix Park. You can take the Metro from DCA or the Amtrak from BWI.
Plus, The Dubliner is downstairs!
