Thinking Vail. Wife and I are not young, but enjoy short hikes and beautiful scenery. Would like rafting and perhaps a trout fishing expedition. Enjoy theater and plays/musicals. Looking to simply get away for a few days. TIA

I second Telluride...Will be going to both in a few weeks. You can't beat the wilderness areas of the San Juans, nor can you beat the million dollar Hwy and the surrounding towns of Ouray, Lake City, Durango, etc.
Telluride is the perfect base for exploring CO.

Breckenridge and Vail are very close, we spent a week in Breckenridge a couple of years ago and visited Vail for a day. Breckenridge was a better place in the summer.

Can't go wrong with any of them IMO. Telluride and Aspen are harder to get to, but it's the summer and driving in CO is as good as an activity as any. I love making drives through the mountain highways of Colorado.

I think you'd enjoy the towns of Aspen and Telluride exponentially over Vail. Vail is mostly a resort town right off I-70. Aspen and Telluride will have a real mountain town feel for ya.

we stayed in Vail last summer
Breckenridge is very close too

Aspen and Telluride are a little further and a little more pricey

Vail has an adventure ridge open during summer but we brought kids and it was perfect for them

Vail is close enough drive up Mt Evans or through Rocky Mtn National Park, we stayed a night in Estes Park as well

Vail has all the charm of a 1970's shopping mall.....which is essentially what it is, an artificial construct. Aspen or Telluride are much nicer.

Telluride is amazing. If you've never been then there's your answer.

I lived there one summer during college, it was epic.
