A new law makes it mandatory for airlines to refund baggage fees for delayed bags. Specifically, airlines must refund baggage fees automatically if luggage is delayed 12 hours after a domestic flight arrival or 15 hours after an international flight. (On July 15, President Obama signed the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2016 extension bill into law. The extension will be in effect until Sept. 30, 2017, and was passed to give policymakers more time to make air-traffic control reform decisions, but this consumer-friendly measure was slipped into the bill.) The new law takes effect immediately.

Delta (DAL) already has a delayed baggage refund policy in place. On its website, the airline states that passengers can apply for a rebate online if their bag is delayed more than 12 hours. The rebate provides a $25 electronic voucher for one bag that can be used on a future flight. The rebate jumps up to $50 for two delayed bags.

This is very good news for the once a year travelers as most flyers, excluding elites, pay these baggage fees. I wish this was the case two years ago when American or Air Berlin lost my bag in Europe on the way to a conference, was known as the guy with the lost luggage for the week .

My bags were delayed by 24 hours once with Delta due to a short layover and only one flight to that location per day. They paid me $150 for each bag. had everything that I needed for the 24 hours in a carryon so I went and blew that money.

Mine was seated approx 36 hours before my wedding. Got it the morning of the wedding, think my suit was in the bag. They paid for about 300$ worth of clothes for the rehearsal dinner.

I've had bags delayed a few times I needed to purchase new clothes for the trip. DELTA has always reimbursed me without issue.

So they passed a law that companies were already implementing on their own. And I suspect if you complained to any of the others they would have refunded.

This is why we have so many laws. Let companies operate in whatever way they choose. Customers will show who wins.

12 hours?

Ha! Alaska Airlines has a 20 minutes guarantee and they've been doing this since 2010 without the government mandating it.

I'll be impressed when they get rid of the old hags as flight attendants. US flight attendants are rude and awful compared to foreign airlines
