United will bar lowest-priced ticket holders from selecting seats

United Continental is trying to make flying on its planes even less enjoyable.
The nation’s No. 3 airline has enacted new rules that limit low-fare customers to a single carry-on piece of luggage. If those passengers want to check a bag — ka-ching! — it’ll cost them extra.
The airline will also bar those who purchase the lowest-priced tickets from selecting their seats. The airline will assign those flyers their seats on the day of departure — meaning couples or families may be broken up and moms with younger children could be sitting many rows apart.
The carrier hopes the new rules are so aggravating that passengers opt for the next-higher-priced ticket or simply pay to check a bag.
United Continental hopes to ring up $1 billion in new annual revenue by 2020 from passengers to opt to pay for what is now free.
The new “Basic Economy” fares — which will be the same as the current low-cost tickets but with more restrictions — will begin in the first quarter of 2017 for travel beginning April 1, the company said Tuesday.
With the new fares and limits, United becomes the first major US airline to limit buyers of its cheapest tickets to a carry-on piece of luggage that must fit under the seat.

They're appealing to the spirit crowd. Always wanted to try spirit to save some money but was always afraid of cancelled flights. Now it's more of a sense of security with united

Just when I thought United was going to fix things and be more like the old Continenfal airlines, they go and frick it up.

This is big news because frankly it's even worse than Delta's economy fares. The carry on luggage will be required to go underneath their feet (basically a backpack) so they're trying to get people to pay for a checked bag. Also there's no chance to buy up to an economy plus seat. You will not earn any miles or EQD on these fares towards your overall status. The fares will be available for purchase in 1Q 2017 for flights 2Q 2017 onward. I have a feeling the prices won't reflect the downgrade in service ($40-$50 fares), basically just making their cheapest tickets now ($100-$150) have zero benefits.
As a sidenote, i'm flying United a few times over the next month and a half just to try them out for the first time in a while. Found an $84 ticket for Newark to Dallas around new years so I figure even with the $25 bag fee I can still make out better than the other airlines. Have a feeling that future trips may just come down to whoever has the best price/not an economy only fare

Well this sucks.
I mostly flew United(Continental before they switched)...mainly because they always had the cheaper rates when I traveled to LA to visit family.
I'm really claustrophobic when I fly, so I prefer a window seat(being able to see out of the window helps me not feel so "closed in", if that makes any sense). So I can't just have my seat randomly picked.

United has never been cheaper than Southwest anytime I've wanted to fly. They aren't even an option.

They seem to always have the best price for me; I mostly fly from NO to Denver. My last flight was only $200 roundtrip on United. I always check a bag, so that part won't affect me, but not getting to pick my seat is enough to send me to another airline.

Ever since they terminated their business relationship with American Express this airline has gone to shite

Ah yes, the remaining fruits of post 9/11 consolidation.

The nickel and dimming makes you wonder why they just don't raise the fares to $500 for short flights?

Well fare depends on where you're flying. Denver is a UA hub so that's no surprise. Exception is when an airline is targeting another's hub and cuts fares. Other then that, the route will dictate the price. A blanket statement "X airline is always cheaper than Y" isn't true.
Point is the lowest UA fare will just become this no frill fare. It's clear that they can't raise prices due to competition. So they just keep adding restrictions. Sucks. AA to follow I guess. Wish I lived on the west coast so I could just be loyal to Alaska/Virgin
