Tennessee football game trip recommendations - Memphis/Nashville? Chattanooga/Asheville?

Some friends and I are planning on making the trip up to Tennessee for the LSU game on 11/18. We are looking to turn it into a longer trip and were thinking of ideas for where to go before heading to Knoxville on Friday or Saturday that week.
One thought I had would be to head to Memphis on Wednesday, then to Nashville for a night or two before heading to Knoxville. I figured this would help make the drive up much easier as Memphis isn't a bad drive to make, and Memphis and Nashville would offer more to do than Knoxville. I'm looking for recommendations on what areas to stay in and what to while there.
Also, we are open to other suggestions of where to spend a couple of days before heading to Knoxville for the game. Chattanooga and Asheville are other places we've talked about, but I wanted to see what the Travel Board had to say about what options we had.
Appreciate any and all recommendations
ETA: I guess I should add that we are all mid 20s, no kids, mix of guys and ladies.

Yeah we kept putting this off but its time to start planning if we want to make a multi day, multi city trip.
Actually the more I look at the locations, Chattanooga and Asheville interests me a lot more. It'd be a couple more hours driving on the way up, but much shorter trips the rest of the way until the drive home (which is going to suck)

Memphis is definitely a city you can do in a day. Stay downtown. Lots of affordable hotels. If you have any questions about which to do, let me know. Hit up Gus's for some fried chicken for lunch and Central BBQ for dinner. People will give their own recommendations for BBQ, but if you want to keep it easy, stay downtown and do that. Graceland is fun, but it's expensive and a little out of the way. If you stay downtown, you can see the Civil Rights museum/MLK's shooting site. Obviously Beale Street as well. There's a few breweries downtown as well.
Midtown is a fun place you can take an uber to and hang around. Overton Square area and/or Cooper Young. There's some good bars around. Again, can give recommendations if you'd like closer to the time.
Nashville is also a fun city. I know less about it. But don't stay downtown. Super expensive. Stay in an airbnb outside downtown and just uber around.
Chattanooga is more nature type stuff with the mountains. Not a ton to do, but there's good bars/restaurants. Lots of great hiking.
I don't know much about Asheville.

I'm not a fan of Memphis but I love Nashville. Downtown hotels are crazy expensive. I usually just stay at the Hampton Inn at Vanderbilt and walk downtown. (I probably enjoy walking more than most people so shuttle/uber would maybe be better).

Memphis is extremely disappointing. Nashville is worth it. Chattanooga is a great city and we have a ton of things to do if you like to get outside.
Asheville is a very nice city, I have a lot more fun spending time in the small towns of WNC than going there though. If you want to hit up breweries, it's a good trip.
You can actually do this in Knoxville now.

This.
Nashville for two nights. Don't stay downtown, but you might be able to find a deal or two if you go early in the week. If you're into the bar and music scene, it is a great time.
Chattanooga was awesome as well. We're thinking about taking the kids back sometime this fall. The downtown area near the river and aquarium is great.

Memphis is far to drive for a boring day of nothing. I like living here but there's not much to do.
