This will be our first trip to Spain.

Madrid and Barcelona are definite stops and I would appreciate some input on what neighborhoods are ideal to book our hotel.

Also, we are currently looking at several other cities such as Toledo, Seville and Valencia. Our main interests are food (I will be attempting to get reservations at Albert Adria's new restaurant Tickets in Barcelona) and history. With that in mind are there any other suggestions?

Thanks in Advance!

this is where we stayed in Barcelona before and after a cruise out of there (trashy I know). In the city center, walk to everything and felt really safe at all hours. Close to Sagrada and the famous shopping area.

ETA Las Ramblas is the shopping area

I've only done Barcelona and Seville.

Both are great, and very different. Seville, Toledo, Granada etc is "real Spain."

Seville has the Alcazar where all the Dorne scenes from Game of Thrones are filmed. Seville also has a plaza that served as Naboo in the Star Wars prequels. Colombus' body at the church (allegedly), and the records from all the New World expeditions, so lots of history.

Grenada of course has the Alhambra.

I spent a week in Barcelona about 5 years ago and 5 days in San Sébastien/Pamplona over 10 years ago, so its been a while. However I loved Spain.

A week in Barca was a perfect amount of time. So much to do and see and easy place to launch day trips (up the costa brava, to Montserrat, etc...). Stayed in the Barrio Gothic in a little apartment. But as others have mentioned Barcelona is different from rest of Spain. Sort of analogous to how New Orleans isnt a Southern city.

Great food, wine, and scenery. Cant wait to go back.

I'll be adding all of this to the list. Thanks!

Madrid:
Adventurous Appetites Tapas Tour
Mercado de San Miguel
Botanical Gardens
Prado
We stayed at the Senator Grand Via Hotel near Puerta del Sol- it was a great jumping off point for walking around the city but apparently they closed down last year.

Valencia (you can easily do this city in 1.5 days):
La Lonja de la Seda (former silk exchange
The aquarium in Valencia is the largest in all of Europe and pretty cool

Barcelona:
Fat Tire Bike Tours
Tapas 24
Parc Guell
Montjuic (site of the 92 olympics)

ETA: noticed you mentioned at least a 2 week trip. I would highly recommend checking out Portugal for a few days. I went last year and loved it. If you want any Portugal recs as well let me know

I lived in Spain briefly several years ago. The most surprisingly enjoyable place was San Sebastian on the north coast. The Basque people are some of the most wonderful and friendly people. Eating and drinking your way through town at the tapas bars is a great time. I didn't know what to expect going into it. It is one of the few places in the world I am interested in returning to. Check it out.

I also really enjoyed the Salvador Dali Museum in Figueres about an hour and a half north of Barcelona. I did it as a day trip from Barcelona.

A good day trip from Madrid is Segovia to see the remains of the Roman aquaducts and Alcazar.

Sitges is a nice side trip from Barcelona.

I liked both Mallorca and Menorca.

We spent a week in Barcelona this past April. We stayed at the K&K Picasso Hotel which was in the perfect location. It was in El Born which is in the Old Town. We ate at great restaurants every night, all of which were within easy walking distance from the hotel. I can detail them for you if you decide to stay in that neighborhood. We did not eat at Tickets. It is hard to get reservations to. We tried to make reservations there before the trip but their website was down for a few days and by the time it was back up they were booked. We did eat at Tast Ller which is another tough reservation. It was exceptional. I can't wait to go back. We would stay in the same hotel or at least the same neighborhood.
