Southwest "wanna get away". Tips, traps, pitfalls? Are there any negatives?

Only flown Southwest 2-3 times and they were booked with packages. Vegas and San Diego.
I will be flying 3 people, including myself. One is my son who is 6 and will be his forest flight. So not getting at least 2 seats next to each other is not an option.
What are the traps or "catches" to this fare? Or is there no catch and I am just a paranoid bastard.

Since your son is 6, you are right at the good end of the cutoff for family boarding. This means that even if you don't get the A boarding pass when you check-in, you will immediately get to board after the A group in "Family boarding". This ensures that you will get at least two seats next to one another
quote:
An adult traveling with a child six years old or younger may board during Family Boarding, which occurs after the “A” group has boarded and before the “B” group begins boarding. If the child and the adult are both holding an “A” boarding pass, they should board in their assigned boarding position.

As far as booking and fares, are we now at the point where it is as good as it will get?
I noticed one route went up $30? Will this possibly trend back down, or is it just going to keep climbing until departure date?
I know you can book too far in advance, and I know (as everybody else) trying to book the week of is pricey.

The beauty SW offers is if you see a lower fare, you can change your flight to the exact same flight and get a credit. Im not sure how it works if you've already booked and aren't a rapid rewards member (I'm assuming you aren't as you said you've never flown sw outside of a travel package). I would recommend becoming a member now.
I check the app all the time after I've booked a flight to try and switch to a lower fare. If you don't plan on flying again with them within a year then it's irrelevant but you do have a year from purchase date to redeem any unused credits.

For $168 each I would just book the trip. Southwest is great because if the fares go back down, you can get a credit for future travel for that difference. So say it's $99 there now but in a week it goes down to $69. You would get 3 x $30 for future travel
This is a little bit far in advance but if the fare is that good I don't see any issue with it. It's been about $170 to fly from New Orleans to Orlando and Houston is another 45 minutes further by flight
ETA: Exactly what mizbayou said

I too check all the time after booking, especially on Tuesdays, to see if any flight on an itinerary has gone down in price/points. When you do that, you get those points/dollars credit back to your rewards account to put towards future travel. SWA is the best airline IMO.

SW is one of the best airlines to fly domestically for price and service. The only two issues are, they don't fly outside the US/Mexico/Latin America, and you really need to live close to one of their service airports. Living in MS makes me fly more UA than anything, but I really like SW.
