My passport is set to expire in September, and I was booked to fly to Italy today returning in a little over a month. I got to the airport this morning ready to go, but I was told my passport was officially expired as it didn't meet the validity requirements to travel to the EU.

That being said, I'm having to pray that the passport agency can flip a renewal request tomorrow, so that I can catch a flight at night or Wednesday morning. Let my mistake be a lesson to others, renew your passport if it has half a year validity left.

Mine expired in March and would like to go to Europe in late September. Are you saying I won't be able to go now?

Just a bit of clarification to your post. Your passport isn't expired. The EU requires you to have at least 6 months of activity left on your passport before you arrive. These types of visa rules vary from country to country. Some are 6 months, some are 12 months, others are just for the duration of your trip.

But yes, it's a good reminder to check the visa/passport requirements for your intended destinations.

NOLA passport office will have you straight in 2-3 hours FWIW.

Yes, thanks for clarifying. I wish I had looked into this before going as I was intending on renewing my passport after this trip.

I'm in Houston, so hopefully they can get me back on my feet.

Its a good reminder. My wife and I are leaving the country for 3 weeks in August. Hers expires in October so she is getting it updated.

A lot of places that "issue" passports do not renew them. She sent hers off in the mail with a passport photo. Website says it should take 3-4 weeks normal delivery

I think I got mine back in about 2 weeks, earlier this year.

Passport process routinely under promises and over delivers. Makes you feel good. Shouldn't take that long at all.

I know about this rule, but I never understood the purpose. Why can't they just have a proper expiration date?

The country you are going to doesn't want your passport to expire while you are there.

Controlling their borders and all that jazz.

It's them that are requiring 6 months validity remaining, not the US.

Imagine you went somewhere for two weeks with a passport that expires in 4 weeks. You get trapped there for additional weeks for some reason.

Now you are outside the country with a expired passport. It is just a safety measure because so many people would push the envelope
