Family is headed to London/Paris) Wife's getting antsy about pickpockets.

Ok to leave passports at hotel?
Do I really need to wear a money belt?

Thanks

I always do. Make a photocopy to keep on you, if that makes you feel better.

No. Just be aware of your surroundings. Maybe put your wallet in your front pocket.

Make photocopies of your passport and carry one with you. Leave the actual passport in your room.

Buy a money clip, take some euro, your drivers license, and a credit card (and a debit card in case you need an ATM). Keep the clip in your front pocket. Leave one credit card in the room. For the women, make sure whatever purse they have has an actual clasp and/or zipper. No magnetic crap, that's easy picking. And as mentioned, just be aware of your surroundings.

You'll be fine just be cautious.

Biggest scam in Paris: gypsies go around with clipboards saying they are collecting signatures for a petition.

It's bullshite. They are distracting you to rob you.

Yes. Wear money belt. Lock up passport and keep copy on your person. Dont keep passport in luggage. I know many who have had their luggage stolen in trains and grabbed in stations. Most hotels take ur passport at check in. Dont know why though since some hotels just look at it and give it back to you. Italy is really overrun with gypsies ...tourist areas in france and london not as much, but best advice is to keep aware.

Montmarte and near the Eiffel in Paris are both shitshows of scammers.

The Africans will grab your wife's arm and tie a bracelet on it, and then demand to be paid for it. If you don't they try to intimidate you.

Otherwise just avoid the normal scams.

How worried should I be about rfid scanners? Our debit and credit cards along with our passports have chips.

I always left my Passport in the hotel room. I did carry my wallet in my front pocket, but I never experienced a pick pocket scenario.

I've carried my passport on me before, it just depends on the scenario. Have never had any issue, just stay alert and conscious of whether someone could make a go at you.

I don't use a belt, but we rarely travel abroad in summer, so I almost always have a vest or jacket with an internal pocket that I can put passports or a wallet/currency into.

License, one credit card, and an amount of euros you're comfortable with wrapped in a rubber band. Stick it in the front pocket.

If you get on a metro, keep your hands down close to your pocket. Just be aware when you're in large crowds.

Don't over think it. I always wore pants that had a button in the back. If we went into an area with a lot of people, on a subway, etc. then I'd move my wallet to my front pocket and if I was standing up I'd put my hand in that pocket if there were people around. Definitely don't rock a wallet with a bunch of crap in it, like said just have your DL, a credit card, and some cash. Leave everything else at home or in your room. I just scan my passport and ID's and email them to myself. No need to do anything more than that.

I would definitely not wear a fanny pack, a fanny pack makes you look like a tourist and therefore a target.

ETA: Trains/ subways/ metros, train stations, and the big tourist areas like Eiffel tower are the main areas to worry about. Just keep it smart there. They aren't ninjas, if they try and steal from you its going to be when there are a bunch of people around.

It is worth remembering that rates of street crime in Europe are far lower than in the US. So if you can manage walking down the street in NOLA w/o getting mugged or pick pocketed, you'll have sufficient street smarts to survive elsewhere. Avoid crowds watching street performers, don't pay attention to kids or adults hawking small items, don't fall for the usual "hey you dropped this bracelet" type scams, and you'll be fine.
