One Night in LA - First Trip

I earned a trip to Laguna Beach through work (staying at the Montage). My conference there is Sunday through Wednesday, but we are going to fly in on Saturday and rent a car to drive into LA.
I've traveled all over but miraculously I have never been to Southern California, other than a couple of layovers at LAX.
What would your suggestions be regarding where to stay, what to do, and where to have dinner?
It's only one night so I'm not trying to drive all over LA to see a bunch of stuff. Probably going to stay in one section of town.

It's $700 a night and my stay doesn't start until Sunday. I'm down to spend $300-$400 on a room but $700 is crazy.

Laguna Beach area is actually pretty close to San Diego and that area as well. La Jolla is not far and that would be worth a day trip.
Getting back to LA is always fun, never know with traffic. Santa Monica pier is worth a view.
Don't waste your time trying to get to the Hollywood sign unless you have to have a picture.
Hit up Rodeo.
I would spend most of my time in that Laguna area or further up north at Newport Beach.

what time Saturday are you arriving? I'd definitely say skip Hollywood.
if you're not easily offended, and the weather is nice, I'd just spend the day in the Venice beach/Santa Monica area.
Rodeo dr. is good if you want to do high end shopping, but most of whats available there you can find at the Santa Monica third st promenade and mall.
edit- santa Monica pier, SM third st promenade and Venice beach is all within a mile and a half radius.... just do that to get a well rounded taste of LA.

I dislike SoCal, but I loved the La Brea Tar pits.

I tend to agree that this would be his best option if visiting LA.
I'd also add (saw someone mention it earlier) that La Jolla and San Diego wouldn't be bad options, either.

Usually a good idea, but he only has a day, and traffic South to San Diego from lax on a Saturday is a nightmare, so he will waste most of his time commuting. Plus, he is staying in an upscale beach community for the rest of his trip, so La Jolla is probably redundant. Venice, while also a beach, is very different from laguna.

Manhattan Beach area is nice and has a pier with many on pier restaurants. There is a Crowne Plaza within walking distance to there and a Holiday Inn. Nice area. When I go to work at our Carson plant I stay there and I go eat at the Fishbar restaurant in Manhattan. Its located on Highland street by the ocean. Take Rosecrans street west and it ends at the place. Fishbar reminds me of an upscale Chimes and has excellent food. Seafood and steaks.

You didn't say which airport you're flying into. I'm assuming LAX. You will be real close to the Venice beach area like said above.
Long Beach area is nice and going towards your destination of Laguna. Lot of nice restarants on Pine street and out by the water. The Queen Mary cruise ship is there and has a steakhouse on it thats decent. The Maya hotel there in LB awesome. The Long Beach Airport Holiday Inn is cool too with a very good restaurant and bar named the Vue at the top of the hotel. Lots of hotel options there from 5 star to dives. The V-Room bar in Long Beach is cool too. I get a shirt from that dive everytime I go.
I really like the Long Beach area the best of all of them to tell the truth.
Wherever you go be preparred to pay to park that car.

We had a one night stay in LA last month. Saw the sunset on the Santa Monica Pier, had a really good dinner at Stout Burgers and Beer, did some shopping at the Third Street Promenade (pedestrian mall) and went to a comedy show at the Westside Comedy Club.
Uber from our hotel to Santa Monica was like $16 about 6 pm and an uber home that night about 1 am was closer to $40.
It was a fairly inexpensive evening and super chill. I only have one night's experience in LA so I don't have much to speak from but I will say I can recommend Santa Monica without any reservation. Im sure you can have an equally awesome time watching the surfers at Hermosa Beach or heading to Venice Beach, etc.

Lsufan- I've recommended stout burger in almost every LA trip thread on the travel board.... did you go based on a recommendation or you just stumbled across it?
IMO stout is the best burger spot in LA.
