NYC Entertainment suggestions?

Planning a long weekend in NYC the first weekend in December, just my gf and I.
We enjoy comedy clubs, so I’d welcome any suggestions on that subject.
I’ve been to a couple Broadway shows and have enjoyed, but cost is an issue, but certainly want to see something while there, so open to any ideas on that too.
Hoping to experience some local food and drink too, and would welcome any hidden gems that may not be 5*.
I appreciate your time already!

The Cellar and Gotham for standup.
Try getting tickets right before curtain for a Broadway show. You run the risk of not getting tickets to the show you want but it’ll be cheaper.
It’d be easier to narrow down food knowing what neighborhood you’ll be in. There are a lot of restaurants in New York.

I appreciate your info AbitaFan.
Haven't picked a place to stay. (Really just came up with this trip about an hour before I posted my questions).
I'm open to suggestions on that too, but that seemed like too much to ask on one damn post.
We're open to suggestions on neighborhoods too. We've both been to NYC, but certainly not familiar enough to make an informed decision. It would be a guess.
We're late 50's, want some entertainment, bar hopping, and local flavor, So wide open to suggestions on neighborhoods.

You can get in Book of Mormon for less than $100 per. There are deals/lotteries/etc but that’s direct from their website.
I’ve been to a couple of clubs but nothing that stood out.
I always recommend the Staten Island ferry. Free, affordable drinks, and great view of SoL and Manhattan skyline.

If you don't have any particular shows you want to see, just hit up the TKTS booth in times square for discounted tickets.

Some really good magic shows out there right now, the one at the mckittrick hotel and Dan white are both very popular.

We always recommend New York Pizza Suprema which is basically right next to Penn Station/Madison Square Garden.

We went there in February and I was honestly not that impressed.
It was good but not memorable.

Friend,
One of the best deals in NYC is found at Sushi 35 West in Midtown, not too far from NY Pizza Suprema. The 35 piece omakase is just $120 and is as good as almost any sushi restaurant’s, but at $60/person for most, as I will eat the 35 pieces myself, whereas most share it. It is not a sit down restaurant. The one time I went I got the omakase, several orders of sea urchin nigri, and some salmon sashimi and walked to Central Park where I broke rice at the Chess House. Exquisite!
If you don’t want the omakase, there are many sushi meals there in the $20-$30 range.
I have never been to a comedy club, so I cannot help you there. We will be visiting the same week of your trip, staying at The Plaza. Some of the most enjoyable activities at that time of year are walking Fifth Ave to see the Christmas displays including the lights at Saks and heading down to Brooklyn near the bridge to Staten Island. That neighborhood decorated even more impressively than the Kenner streets of West Esplanade near the Chinese Presbyterian Church back in the 90s.
Exploring the churches of NYC is always a worthy investment of time. Maybe we could meet up for some hot chocolate at Max Brenner or Serendipity or High Tea at The Plaza. NY in December is one of the best places in the world!

TulaneLSU

If you’re going to the Comedy Cellar, hit either John’s of Bleecker (whole pizza) or Bleecker Street Pizza for incredible slices.

Go see the Rockettes at RCMH. Pass by earlier in the day when they’re handing out coupons and buy directly from the ticket office there

Well, that's a shame. Maybe great pizza isn't your thing. Last time I was there, it was perfect.

Joe’s Pizza on Carmine St. is also near the Cellar and very good. Ray Romano has a special that he did from the Cellar. At the end, he and his family walk to Joe’s.
If you can’t get in the Cellar (read up on their ticket process well in advance), there are two clubs around the corner. We went to the Fat Black Pussycat one night and saw some good beginners doing 5 or 10 minute spots.
Next time I go, I want to hit Birdland and some jazz clubs.
Jimmy’s Corner is a dive bar near Times Square. Way cheaper beer than anywhere in that area, and the place has real character. Lots of articles written on it.
McSorley’s Old Ale House Is another old joint with character. Has both kinds of beer, light and dark.
Fraunces Tavern is good for food or drink. George Washington wine there after they won the war to say goodbye to his men. The Dead Rabbit, nearby in Wall Street area, is on many lists of best bars.
Take a train or bus up near Columbia University and visit Grant’s Tomb. There is a visitor center with a film across the street. Check the hours. Tomb hours are limited.
It’s a short bus ride from there to The Grange, Alexander Hamilton’s place in Harlem (it’s fine; I walked all over the area). Has a short film, and you can tour the house. Check the tour schedules.

We are going in March. We generally see two Broadway shows when in NYC.
This year I am excited about Harmony!
It is new to Broadway and opens in November so it is still a bit of an unknown show.
But the story is perfect for Broadway. It tells the story of the Comedian Harmonists. They were a comedy/music/vaudeville group in Germany in the 20s/30s and the among the biggest music acts in Europe at the time. 3 of the ensemble were Jews. Nazis come to power, the rest is history.

Show up at Gramercy Tavern 10 mins before they open and do lunch at the bar. It’s first come first served and can be tough to get in.. They have a special bar menu though which my wife and i prefer as it’s more casual; at least one of you should order the burger and split it. Ask the bartender for recommendations… Fantastic food, service, cocktails, wine and beer.

Food Tours of New York
Highly recommend a food tour. I’ve done two with this company and they are great. Eat a snack, walk and hear about history, point out architecture, taste something from a long time staple or new upstart, drink a drink, more history, another taste.
The Noho one is great! They show you were they filmed some of the Godfather, where some monsters used to meet and where and how the Italians lived when they came to the USA.
I’d second Book of Mormon if you like comedy. One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen/heard.
Enjoy!

Friend,
If you ever do another food tour in NY, I cannot more wholeheartedly endorse Scott’s Pizza Tours. We did our first tour with him in 2010, going to Keste’, which is the Mecca for Neapolitan style in America, Bleecker St Pizza, John’s of Bleecker, and Joe’s in rapid succession. We still keep in touch and he has helped guide me to some of the lesser known great pizzerias in NY, like Andrew Bellucci’s (RIP).
Yours,
TulaneLSU
