Found cheap airfare to New Zealand in early August so me and 2 buddies jumped on it.

What are some things to do/places to go? None of us have been before and all love outdoors activities. Just looking for some recommendations before we start planning things. Flying into Auckland and will be in NZ for 8 days.

TIA.

Are you taking the new Air New Zealand flight out of IAH?

This has been a while back when we were working in Malaysia but people would rent an RV and just drive around and they had some great photos so looks like they had a good time.

Just a warning, it may be a bit chilly in August. Think I went in October or November to the north island and it was still slightly cold. Auckland is the "big city" there, lots of sailing but not my favorite. Went on a tour to Taupo and Rotorua. Rotorua has some nice hot springs, but the place smelled like sulphur. Think there's skydiving at Taupo. Stopped at a farm and got to feed a baby sheep, everyone got upset when the farmer said it'd be ready in a few weeks . Also went by Hobbiton and Mount Tongariro (volcano from Lord of the Rings). I went hiking around on a several hour hike, but there's a long trip (Tongariro Alpine Crossing) if you're into hardcore hiking. There's actually a ski mountain on the back side of it that should be open when you go as well. The glow worm caves are also worth it, forget what town they were in.

Don't worry about staying at hostels, they're safe and it's a great way to meet people from around the world. Enjoy

ETA: Oh, forgot to mention that you should probably go to the south island even if it's just for a few days. All my friends who went there said it was awesome can hike on a glacier and do other outdoorsy winter things.

There are some caves that you can climb down into or repel into then canoe in the cave lit by glow worms.

Lots of beaches including a few black sand beaches.

There are some places in Rotorua where you can do something similar to a luau, but with the Maori. They have some hot springs you can swim in and others you can eat food that they cook in them. There are also some geysers.

Hobbiton is cool and there are some beautiful spots along the drive.

I went in August a couple years ago to the south island. Queenstown was the coldest I've ever been in my life. Just a warning. Look at the globe and see how close you are to Antarctica.

That's right. I'll be on Air New Zealand out of IAH.

The other guys are flying from Dallas and San Francisco.

Thanks for the suggestions. We have a completely clean slate at this point and are open to anything.

We understand it'll be cold for sure and that will likely keep us on the north island. I think we all certainly want to snowboard, hike, and check out Hobbiton.

Appreciate all the suggestions/personal experiences.

RV is an interesting idea. Do you know how that turned out for them in terms of maneuvering around? This could definitely be a possibility if we could maybe rent a Jeep and a camper or something.

Although I think staying in hostels would be a great experience like another poster mentioned.

Here's the link for the skiing/snowboarding. I guess there's two ski mountains on Mt. Ruapehu: Turoa and Whakapapa. Looks like a lot of blues and blacks LINK

ETA: Opens July 2nd so should be plenty of snow for ya in August

I lived in NZ for six months. Queenstown is an absolute must. It's no colder there than a normal winter in the South. There you can bungee jump, skydive, snow ski the Remarkables (Southern Alps) as well as get out on the lake there. If you want to see the country, I could not recommend the Kiwi Experience any more highly. It's a bus that caters to 18-35 year olds that are on their Overseas Experience from all over the globe (mostly Europe). Kiwi Experience

Let me know if you have any other questions.
