Going to NYC for the week of Fourth of July. I have read that, while Times Square is OK for first time visitors, it is touristy, crowded and loud. Therefore, is their a best area to stay at from the other areas such as Greenwich Village, Upper/Lower Westside/Eastside, Chelsea, Financial area etc...

Will have family with teenagers and plan to rent a 2 bedroom apartment...

Village would be fun. Tons of places to go. I personally struggle with teenagers in NYC. I have a hard time finding things for my son to do.

West Village/Soho/Chelsea are your best bets.

Last time I was there I stayed in Flat Irons near Gramercy Park and loved it.

I rented this apartment in the UES a while back for a trip for my family and it was incredible. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Central Park and the Met were only a few blocks away. Subway station 2 blocks away. Loved it.

Everyone else in this thread pretty much nailed it. Times Square is a hell hole. I'd just go to say you saw it then peace out and enjoy the rest of your trip going places that are awesome, like Union Square or the Highline.

If you stay in WV the girls can walk up to Meatpacking for shopping, Soho/Nolita for shopping and also, not too far from Union Sq. Tons of fun restaurants.

Agree with Chelsea and the East or West Village. Lots of shopping on 9th Avenue in Chelsea and easy walking distance to Washington Square Park, Broadway, 5th Avenue, Bleecker Street.

Thanks for all the insight. I hope to zero in on a rental in the West Village/Chelsea area soon!

Brooklyn Heights, it's really nice to get off the subway after a day in NYC and be in a peaceful setting.
