The wife and I are going in a couple of weeks. We're just looking to spend a few days away from home and the kids.

Neither of us have ever been, so I'm looking for recommendations on:
a. Where to stay (Areas of town? Specific hotels - 4-star, but nothing crazy expensive)?
b. What to see / do? We're not big into sports, but figured we'd check out Wrigley Field. There's also a bean sculpture and skyscrapers...other than that, what is there?
c. Getting around - we're flying in. Do we rent a car or stick to public transport?

We are early 40s and looking to generally sightsee, enjoy some cooler weather, and eat some good food and drink some good drinks.

TIA>

Field Museum is awesome. Take the architectural boat tour at dusk. Book that early.

The L is pretty easy. DOn't rent a car unless you are going to the burbs.

Stay in River North or Gold Coast. Maybe the loop or on the river.

Try as many different restaurants as you can. Avoid chains and realy avoid trendy stuff. Chicago has great spots but folks get caught up in the trends. There are also lots of great dives, don't forget those. And have some tavern pizza, not deep dish.

Maybe a night at Gibsons or Erie Cafe. Gene & Georgetti was once good but the new owners did a number on it. Wrigley is awesome.

Also Albany park is at the end of the brown line and has food from all around the world. Supposedly the most diverse zipcode in the country.

Also consider Andersonville if you want to get out of downtown.

I stayed right on the river in a Marriott (convention type hotel) or something. Overlooking Michigan ave.
Bike tour with food sampling is great. Bobbys or something on the East side of town.
Architecture tour on boat.
Field Museum.
Museum of Science and Industry (U Boat)
Chicago Art Institute (Ferris Bueller museum)
The Ledge/Sear’s tower (stand on the glass floor 1000’ up in the building.
Walking around the Bean and the park.
Soldier field for a game if possible. Wrigley for a game if possible.

We flew in, took the train from airport to middle of downtown. Very easy and cheap. You don’t need a car.

There’s easily a dozen threads on Chicago restaurants here.

Don’t rent a car.

Just going to quickly run through your three questions:

- Stay in River North, around Mag Mile or along Wacker near The Loop. Hit Google Maps and there will be dozens of options for any budget.

- Since we don't know your interests, Google will be your friend. There are many parks, museums and skyscrapers in Chicago. Few quick examples - top of the Willis Tower, check out Adler Planetarium, walk through Art Institute, get of downtown and walk Lincoln Park, etc.

- No reason to rent. CTA will get you where you need.

- For food, very much recommend West Loop and Logan Square - two best restaurant neighborhoods in the city.

ETA: There is a lot of Chicago on this board and F&D. You can find many of those threads using the search option.

lots of threads on chicago, search for those.

great food city, I'd suggest researching this on your own because there's so many great options. Girl and the Goat was a great food experience. Tons of great steakhouses, italian, japanese...

the field museum, art institute, architecture boat tour and wrigley field were my personal favorites. you can use public transportation and/or uber/lyft. no need to rent a car.

As far as hotels that aren’t obvious 5 star options, I’ve enjoyed the Chicago Athletic Association (great location, very cool building and rooms) and the intercontinental (I love this hotel pool, but I’m kind of a weirdo for old swim atriums and natatoriums).

Even if you care nothing of sports I would find tickets to the cubs if you can. Attending a game, walking around the stadium before is just great.

I love chicago. The architecture tour is great.
