Going to NYC for four days in mid October. What are some must see things around the city? This'll be my first time in NYC. Will be staying in Brooklyn.

The One World Observatory and the 9/11 museum were both excellent. I also liked walking over the Brooklyn Bridge and taking a water taxi back to Manhattan; you could do the opposite.

You'll get a ton of advice in this thread. Not saying that those are the top three things. Those are what stuck out to me when I was there last month.

Food, lots and lots of food

9/11 memorial/museum/one world trade

Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island - if you don't have tickets, you may be screwed already on this one. Tickets to get to the top sell out like a year in advance

Rockefeller Center probably isn't a must do, but I enjoyed the tour and the top of the rock. You don't have to go to the top of every building, this is a good one to pick if Empire State and One World Trade are both extremely busy.

MoMA and the Met for museums. These are the two I enjoyed the most. I didn't enjoy the Natural History museum as much as I thought.

Central Park, it's fun to check out a bunch of the well known spots here.

Show on broadway is a good time.

Times Square is overrated, but if you haven't been, you must find out for yourself.

High Line is a neat park.

That's all I can think of right now, lots to see and do in NYC.

I liked the nice set of bleachers/risers right in the middle. You can start there and take it all in, and then move on if you want.

We took the tram to Roosevelt Island and walked around one night after dinner and it was pretty cool seeing the city all lit up from the sky and a different view.

First thing I'd do is extend the trip to 8 days.

You can't even scratch the surface in 4 days.

Thanks for all the replies.

I wish I could extend it but can't.

The one absolute must do is World Trade Center, everything else depends on personal tastes.

There's world class shopping, dining, arts and culture in NYC. It's truly the greatest city in the world.

Really enjoy Ellis Island but with limited time may want to skip it for another time.
High Line is definitely a unique experience. Spend about 5 minutes in Time Square. Top of the Rock instead of Empire State Building. Find time for frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity (E 60th St). Might be an incredibly touristy thing to do but the stuff is good.

I agree with your general point, but not necessarily your recommended approach.

If you've never been to NYC, a 4 day "scratch the surface" trip can make a lot of sense. Knock out a few of the obvious tourist spots and get a general overall feel for the place. Then you can plan another trip a year or two later to get a bit more in depth and take in some of the less obvious places.

It can be a big, daunting (and tiring) place -- especially if you've never been and think you will be able to do it for a week+ having no feel for it at all really.

Brooklyn Bridge was my favorite spot in NY. There is a Shack Shack burger near by too.

Also grab some Halal food on the street.

After your visit the obvious places, don't underestimate just walking the West Village to see the turn of the century brownstones, shops and restaurants. Soho is packed with tourists but has great shopping if interested. Walk through Washington Sq. Park and head west. Bleecker St. is good. It is easy to get to Meatpacking from there and then you can walk up to High Line. Have a drink at the Standard. Such a great city

I just went in August for three days. I bought the city pass, it includes most of the touristy things you would want to do statue/Ellis island, top of the rock, met, natural history, Empire State, 9/11 for one price. Also walked Brooklyn bridge, had amazing pizza and steak, walked around and explored. Took the entire time for the most part, and had an amazing time

Dtr and I went recently. Caught a Yankees game, the rockettes, a Broadway play, rode bikes by the Hudson, shopped, Central Park bike rides/carousel/zoo, pedicab.

Also Chinatown, soho, high line (neat but it's not something we'd do again), went to The View, Carlos bakery in Jersey, St Patrick's cathedral, 9/11 memorial. We did walk the Brooklyn Bridge but only halfway .. It was midl July and there was a heatwave.

All of the other "big" things we did in a prior school trip so we spent our time in other areas. Do wish we had gone to Freedom Tower.

We want to go back in February at Mardi Gras for a different NYC experience. And ice skating in Central Park and Rockefeller plaza.

I tried a bunch of NYC restaurants when I was there. The Halal food cart falafel was the best out of all of them.
