My wife and I are going to Maui in April, outside of Pearl....what else do suggest? We are pretty adventures and have done zip lining before, not sure if she will go for it again though as she was scared to death last time. Let me know your top attractions please

also any particular Luau that yall consider the best or must do? what about food, any particular recommendations?

Pearl is not on Maui, it's on Honolulu

IMO, road to Hana is a bit overrated but still a nice way to spend the day. BUT, if you skip it, it's not the end of the world.

Food = Mama's Fish House

Must Do = Haleakala at sunrise and self guided bike tour down the mountain

Are you going to Maui or Oahu? Pearl Harbor is on the latter.

On Maui the whales could still be there in April and if they are, a whale boat tour is pretty neat.

Yes there are some zip lines on the north shore and here is the link.

If you SCUBA, it is pretty good there too and most all the dive companies are reputable. Since Lahaina burnt, I'd check for some dive shops in Kihei. Maui is pretty good for shore dives if you are experienced and want to not do the boat thing. Maui is rife with easy access beaches for snorkeling too.

As for Oahu, traffic in Honolulu is crazy but a tour around the island produces a lot of sights. A big attraction has always been the Pearl Harbor Memorial.

Do some searching but there is a free walking/hiking trail inland that will take you up to a waterfall.

On the northshore, check to see if there are some surfing competitions on Sunset Beach and the Pipeline.

I have been to Maui or Oahu (worked there) a lot and after the first luau, no more for us. Too touristy.

we actually enjoy touristy things. Im not big into trying to see how the locals live or any of that bullshite. more into doing things that are fun, like zip lining, snorkling, pearl, maybe some ATVing, surfing, relaxing on the beach, eating lots of good food and see lots of beautiful sites.

i know many on the travel board are into visiting places and seeing how locals live and they like to make fun of people that like to go to resorts and stay on sight mostly....that's cool if that's your preference...me i like the resorts, tours etc....could give two fricks how the poor locals live at all.

i appreciate the pictures. beautiful for sure

The Old Lahaina Luau is the best but I'm not sure when they will re-open since the fire. I just saw on their website that they've cancelled everything thru at least Jan 31 but hopefully they'll be back in business by April.

We loved the Road to Hana! If you want to visit the black sand beach at the state park, you need to make a reservation in advance.

For ziplining, we did North Shore Ziplines, in part because it seemed to be relatively tame as we had one person in our group who was hesitant about going. Imo, it was really expensive and a little too tame, so not worth the $$$.

Mama’s fish house may be the best restaurant ive ever been to but if you plan on going you need to reserve NOW. It books up months in advance. We got lucky and got in for lunch our last day when somebody cancelled

The volcano sunrise is incredible but it’s all about the weather. If it’s overcast or foggy it’s going to be worthless. Fair warning you have to wake up at 2 or 3 am for this and it’s cold up there but the site is well worth it

Any of the sunset cruises out of Lahaina are great and pretty laid back. Snorkeling was pretty cool but I have an irrational fear of sharks and had slight anxiety the whole time

Road to Hana you’re either going to hate or love. I enjoyed it but the fiancé freaked out the entire time over the tight cliff side roads. If you do do it download the app that guides you through

Road to Hana is cool but not neccessary to do the whole thing. The state park area was my favorite. Get passes ahead of time (at least a day or two in advance) to allow you onto the park property. I could have turned around at the park and been fine.

Go to as many different beaches as possible.

Turtles and seals are all over the beaches which is pretty cool. Give them their space.

Nuka sushi is good (in Haiku). May be a bit of a drive if you are staying in Kihei or some other area.

You already booked your flights? Would make much more sense to fly out of Oahu and fly from Maui there and do Oahu last.

If love stupid touristy shite and have never been to Oahu it’s loaded with that stuff.

Pearl Harbor is a navy base, I haven’t been in years but it’s not exactly a museum. Now, the USS Arizona that was sunk is a museum with a boat ride out. I’m sure there’s other stuff, but the harbor is an active military base so it’s not exactly something you just walk around and site see.

ETA: also if you have never been to Hawaii most people don’t realize that it’s obviously volcanic land, so there’s not exactly beaches everywhere. Many of the beaches are man made. So if you leave your resort just hoping to find another random beach, depending on the island that’s not how it works usually. Oahu has a lot more beaches for example.

The road to Hana is nice but I actually likes the back side after you pass Hana as it wasn't crowded at all and it is just a beautiful place to drive and picnic. It will take all day to do it at 125 about miles, but you never see anything like it.

If you try to squeeze the Road to Hana into a single day, you probably won’t enjoy it. It’s become too crowded unfortunately.

If you can swing it, the best way is to stay a night or two at the Hyatt in Hana. You can start the trek in the afternoon and take your time getting to Hana. You avoid the morning rush for the early stops—which are pretty underwhelming anyway. The best stops are near Hana.

You can wake up in Hana and hit the Black Sand Beach before crowds get there, then do the Venus Pools and PiPiWi Trail before they get busy. I also agree with the suggestion above about driving around the backside of the island.

We did this with our kids recently and had a blast.

I don't know anyone that has traveled there since the fire. How's the recovery? Is everything opened back up?

Mamas Fish House was amazing. We got lucky and was able to reserve it a few days out, but would reserve now if interested in going.

I'm on Maui right now. Everything Lahaina is shut down. Recovery hasnt really begun yet. Everything outside of Lahaina is operating as normal. Had lunch at Mamas Fish House today and it was very good. The decor, ambiance, grounds are just as good as the food which is saying something.

Do the whale watching tour. Preferably the first tour at sunrise. It was amazing. Rent your snorkeling gear at The Snorkel store. They give you a report every day where to go snorkeling based on safety etc.

It’s been mentioned already, but I will third or fourth the opinion that sunrise on Haleakala and biking down after is a must.

We stayed at the Sheraton Maui a couple of decades ago, and at that time you were able to climb up that black rock and jump off. Not sure if they allow it these days.

We went up to the north shore of Maui for an afternoon and watched the surfers and kite surfers. It was a nice afternoon.
