Luggage on a long road trip-storage in vehicle issue

I'm considering renting a UHaul to put our luggage because we're only taking one vehicle (3 adults, 2 kids). The one's I've seen are either too big or too small for our needs.
There will be a small space by the third row, but nothing that can hold everyone's stuff properly- and I wanted to make that space stuff that'll entertain the kids and snacks.
Has anyone else had this problem? What'd you do with luggage?

You need a cargo box on top. Or one of those hitch mounted cargo carriers.

was thinking that, good suggestions
for the hitch mounted one- what if there's rain? thought about using ice chests instead of suitcases.

I use this with plastic containers instead of suitcases.

Walmarks sells a waterproof zip bag that goes on top of the vehicle but I put suitcases, etc in the bag and strap it on cargo carrier in the rear.

Car topper (turtle) is the way to go. Also, edit the hell out of your packed items. Plan to spend an hour at the laundromat midway thru the trip, and don't drag half the house with you.

Hitch rack. They have large rubber bags that you stuff all your crap into.

That's what we did for an Alaska roadtrip, worked great. But be careful of your exhaust. The first time I did this the exhaust melted part of the bag. So I had a shop move the exhaust pipe from the rear to the side.

We rent the 4'x8' single axle uhaul when we o pheasant hunting in South Dakota. It cost less than $200 for 10 days with insurance and is very light

Hitch haulers are great. If you can't carry enough stuff on it for a family of 5 you are bringing way way too much crap. I have 2 large plastic storage bins I use on mine, put one ratchet strap front to back on each and then one across both sideways. I can still fit a small cooler or other stuff on my rack with the two large bins but rarely do. If you still need more room go with the roof.
