Laramie, Wyoming to Yellowstone NP

Got a business trip up to Laramie, WY in late May.
I would like to extend the trip and explore this area and possibly do some backpacking and camping for a night or two.
Looking for suggestions.
ETA: didn't realize Yellowstone NP wasn't that far from Laramie. Maybe I can get some recommendations on a 3 day tour of Yellowstone...where to backpack, camp, eat, etc.

Were you unaware that Yellowstone was primarily in WY?
Because Laramie is on the other side of the state from the park (500 miles or so).

You're a whole lot closer to RMNP and all the National Forests and Wilderness Areas surrounding it.

The best way I can think of to get there would be to take 80 west to Rock Springs and then up US 191 to Jackson, and then you could go to Grand Teton and Yellowstone. Just be careful, even in late may the mountains can get a lot of snow (Yellowstone area got 3 feet of snow the weekend before Memorial Day weekend when we were there in 2007). Like PNW said, you are talking 800+ miles and close to 9 hours drive one way.
Rocky Mountain is only about 120 miles and less than 3 hours south of Laramie. Also, if the road is open, take Wyoming 130 west out of Laramie to Centennial and then keep going up into the Medicine Bows at Snowy Range pass. beautiful area up there, but again accessibility all depends on the weather and how much late season snow they get.

Backpacking in Yellowstone sucks compared to the Tetons. That's nearly factual. Spend two days in GTNP and one day driving through Yellowstone. I'm just sharing what I think to be true.

The Medicine Bow range is just west of Laramie. It's not as rugged as some of the other places but it doesn't have the crowds and has lots of wildlife (moose at high elevation, antelope on the way up). I really liked it and intend to get back some day and camp it for several days. Very nice trail up Medicine Bow Peak. And Laramie has the best Thai restaurant I've ever eaten at.

Nice suggestion. There are so many spectacular places that AREN'T national parks.
I'm not a fan of Yellowstone just based on crowds alone.

Yep. We hit the Medicine Bow range after Yellowstone and that's certainly one reason I liked the Medicine Bow range so much. The only place we saw people at all was the main trailhead and there was plenty of parking available. One woman told us that the range continues down into Colorado and it's really nice there was well.
