JAL from the mid 50's to 1970 flew an irregular, special service to MSY (and on to South America). Hard to believe, but here's the proof
1956
1970
1956
1970

The MSY wikipedia page is an interesting read.

MSY has always been an interesting airport. I remember TACA, LACSA, and Aeromexico serving there in the 90's. Copa airlines currently serves MSY to Panama City Tocumen International in Panama.
The original Pan Am served MSY, and Southwest made New Orleans their first destination outside the state of Texas in 1979.
The old National Airlines served Amsterdam on a weekly basis in the late 70's.
Lots of interesting history for a non hub, medium size airport, albeit tourist town.

You'd think in 2016 that Nola, being a destination city, would have more flights and airlines.

MSY has a ton of domestic flights already, and growing. But I've said for years, if New Orleans had the business travel market of Austin TX, MSY would be insanely busy. I think it can support wkly service to Europe. It's a little overdue, imo.

Actually, as a kid in the early 1970s, we took what was called the Delta-PanAmerican interchange to London LHR.
It was a Delta DC-8,which we boarded here, flew to Baltimore BWI, and stayed on the plane all the way to London. PanAmerican pilots flew the Delta plane over the Atlantic.
I do remember at LHR they parked us way in a back corner of the airport and bussed us to the terminal. Kind of cool always disembarking the plane into the crisp, burned jet fuel air.

Very interesting. Deregulation put an end to a lot of point to point flying back in the day.
Delta was still flying the DC-8-70 ATL-JAN-DFW-LAS in the very early 1990's, just before Delta retired them. Some of those birds ended up as converted freighters flying for UPS, and defunct Emery and BAX.

MSY had a a lot of continuing service to Central and South America years ago.
TACA even relocated their headquarters to MSY/New Orleans during the civil war in El Salvador in the late 70s through 1980.

The South American services was when flights would make multiple stops enroute. But was bearable as passengers got to deplane, Mill around and reboard to an open bar. Then retire to a coach seat with a 36in pitch.
Hubs, security and dereg killed that.

New Orleans was the original gateway to Latin/South America. Before deregulation most airlines would have their technical stops at MSY before heading South.
Based on what I can find from the DOT, MSY has not had trans Atlantic service since 1990. Notable international service from MSY:
TACA flew to Belize between 1990-1998, and San Pedro Sula between 1998-2005 (a few in frequent flights to Roatan sprinkeld in).
LACSA flew to Cancun between 1990-2001, Aeromexico served Mexico City in 1991, Merida 1991-1994 and Cancun 1991-1999. Aviateca flew to Guatemala between 1990-1995, Air Canada flew to Toronto between 1998-2005 before restarting in 2010.
TWA flew Cancun in 1999-2000. There are a few others, but these are the major ones.
