We visited a little over 5 years ago and loved it. I did a Trip Review on this board once we got back.

Azores -> Porto -> Lisbon with a couple stops in between.

We stuck to Sao Miguel in the Azores since we were only going to be there a couple of days and it was beautiful. Stunning landscapes. I would love to go back one day to visit Terceira and the vineyards on Pico.

In Porto, I'd recommend visiting the port lodges in the afternoon because we did a late morning visit and by the time we had finished lunch I was annihilated. We visited Graham's for our tour. I'd recommend going with one of the premium tastings since it's only $15-$20 more and they bring out some delicious bottles. They have an on-site restaurant called Vinum that is awesome as well.

Lisbon was nice, but our quick stop in Sintra stole the show. Super crowded during the summer, though. Roads aren't really wide enough for two cars, so when you add in random people parking on the side of the road, pedestrian traffic, and tour busses then you get a hell of a traffic backup.

Everyone I know who has been to Portugal has said it is the best vacation they've been on.

Will be doing this trip later this year.

Do you have a day trip planned to the Douro Valley or will you being staying overnight? I think we're going for an overnighter.

There is a rather large American and British ex-pat retiree community in Portugal these days. I'm seriously considering living there myself. It's a nice out-of-the-way country that is first world, old world, and the cost of living is not out of this world. I've lived in Costa Rica for a year and a half now, and I like it fine. However, the more I hear about Portugal, the more curious I become. Here in CR, the health care I've received has been very good. However, I think I would have to return to the states if I developed severe complications. I'm under the impression that health care is just as good in Portugal as it is in the States. Winters there are about like that stretch of Atlantic coast between St. Simons Island, Georgia, and Jacksonville and the summers are like upstate New York. I think I can deal with that.

We are doing a private tour day trip. But we are traveling as a group of 5 adults which is a much different trip than a honeymoon.

Question about Madeira. I looked it up and on TripAdvisor the hotels were pretty inexpensive. Less that $100/night
Is this one of those places that will cost a good deal to get there, but once there, becomes very affordable?

I don't know what kind of deals that you found, but you might save some money just getting a ticket to Europe and then taking a low-cost airline to Madeira.

But yeah, Portugal is one of the very cheapest countries that use the Euro, and the dollar is already incredibly strong against the Euro right now. Stuff like food and lodging should be significantly less than what you would pay for comparable stuff in the US.
